Requirements
  • Engineer I requires a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Engineer I is an entry-level position requiring minimal or no prior electrical engineering experience.
  • Engineer II requires one to three years of industry experience as a practicing electrical engineer.
  • Senior Engineer requires five years of industry experience as a practicing electrical engineer; Professional Engineer licensure is preferred.
  • Senior Engineer requires eight years of industry experience as a practicing electrical engineer and Professional Engineer licensure.
  • Senior Engineer II requires eight years of industry experience as a practicing electrical engineer and Professional Engineer licensure, or ten years of relevant engineering experience in lieu of Professional Engineer licensure.
  • Principal Engineer requires twelve years of industry experience as a practicing electrical engineer, including highly technical work of a specialized nature, and Professional Engineer licensure, or fifteen years of such experience in lieu of Professional Engineer licensure.
  • Demonstrate technical leadership, sound engineering judgment, problem-solving, conflict-resolution, risk assessment and mitigation, decision-making, organization, time management, prioritization, and the ability to manage changing priorities and concurrent deadlines.
  • Apply company and industry standards, including the National Electrical Safety Code, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, American National Standards Institute, and National Electrical Code, for electrical substation design.
  • Possess knowledge and understanding of human performance improvement techniques.

Responsibilities
  • Develop electrical substation physical, protection, and control design packages.
  • Design and deliver infrastructure supporting transmission, distribution, renewable energy integration, large industrial customers, digital substations, and 765-kilovolt transmission systems.
  • Support transmission and distribution substation projects involving system reliability, load growth, renewable energy integration, and emerging customer demands.
  • Develop and review electrical substation equipment specifications.
  • Perform engineering calculations related to electrical substation design.
  • Initiate relay protection and control integration activities in coordination with the Protection Department.
  • Scope and review contractor and consultant engineering deliverables.
  • Support commissioning and energization activities.
  • Work on greenfield substation additions, brownfield expansions, breaker replacements, transformer additions and replacements, transmission interconnections, thermal and renewable generation interconnections, large customer load additions, and grid modernization initiatives.
  • Provide engineering services and technical input for project scoping, deliverables, planning, estimating, design, construction, operations guides, continuous improvement, and quality assurance reviews.
  • Create and modify physical drawings, alternating-current/direct-current schematics, wiring diagrams, communications diagrams, and plan-and-profile drawings.
  • Provide technical expertise, review, and implementation for materials and equipment specifications.
  • Create and review construction contracts.
  • Provide technical support before and during project construction.
  • Create, review, and update substation operations guides.
  • Provide engineering assistance to other departments and perform assigned additional responsibilities.
  • Provide technical input for engineering studies and investigations and prepare oral and written reports.
  • Provide engineering assistance during critical equipment failures and emergencies.
  • Lead complex substation projects, provide technical guidance to junior engineers, and perform engineering reviews of design packages.
  • Develop engineering standards and best practices, provide technical leadership across multiple business units, support strategic engineering initiatives, and solve complex problems.
Desired Qualifications
  • Successful completion of internships, co-op programs, or related utility experience.
  • Professional Engineer licensure for the Senior Engineer level when the five-year experience path is used.
