Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in Chemical, Physical, Biological, or Clinical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology from an accredited institution, or an associate degree in Chemical or Biological Science or Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited institution.
  • Knowledge of human genetics, molecular biology, tissue culture, basic hematology, specimen requirements, living-cell handling and culturing, chromosome morphology, chromosome abnormalities, and chromosome-analysis methods.
  • Ability to stock and maintain laboratory equipment, supplies, and chemicals.
  • Ability to follow laboratory procedures and comply with federal and state health and safety regulations.
Responsibilities
  • Receive, log, and store specimens; determine appropriate test procedures and billing codes for each specimen in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Initiate, maintain, and harvest cell cultures; prepare and stain slides for microscopic diagnosis of blood, bone marrow, amniotic fluids, tumors, and solid tissues.
  • Perform microscopic analysis and image capture, karyotyping, and preparation of reports documenting findings and diagnoses for each specimen.
  • Prepare tissue-culture media, reagents, stocks, work solutions, chemical solutions, and staining solutions for routine and special cytogenetic studies.
  • Maintain supplies and reagents, respond to equipment-maintenance needs, and perform daily laboratory cleaning.
  • Maintain accurate records of culture processing, specimen labeling, chromosomal analysis, patient information, and daily equipment performance.
  • Ensure compliance with federal and state health and safety regulations and participate in ongoing laboratory quality assurance, quality control, and quality management programs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
