USC's Marshall School of Business is seeking an Academic Advisor to join our team. The Office of Undergraduate Advising and Student Affairs supports the education and development of undergraduate students in USC's Marshall School of Business by providing a broad array of academic support and student engagement programs and services, including: academic advisement; internal transfer admissions; new student orientation; scholarships, honors, and awards; and student organization support. Marshall’s Undergraduate Advising and Student Affairs is responsible for providing advising and student support to more than 4300 undergraduate majors and 1400 minors. Our office is currently operating on a hybrid work schedule.
Academic Advisors serve as students' primary point of contact throughout their undergraduate experience. In addition to providing academic planning and policy guidance, advisors deliver holistic advising that addresses academic, personal, and professional development needs. Advisors manage individual caseloads, engage in proactive intrusive outreach to students experiencing academic setbacks, connect students with campus resources, develop individualized success plans, monitor degree progress, and intervene early to keep students on track for timely graduation. The Marshall advising team also administers the internal transfer process, minor admissions, emphasis declarations, specialized advising for joint-degree programs, and coordinates new student orientation programming for both Marshall and Leventhal students.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Provide academic counseling for undergraduate students. Advise on matters of curriculum, course and degree requirements, transfer credit evaluation, and graduation counseling and clearance.
- Monitor student progress, maintain academic unit student records, and assist with petition applications.
- Advise students on an individual and group basis as part of assigned student program and services. May meet with parents, faculty, and campus partners to provide information and facilitate problem resolution.
- Evaluate student problems (academic, administrative or personal) and refer students to appropriate student support services. Liaise and partner with other offices on behalf of students to facilitate problem resolution.
- Interface with faculty, administrators, and students regarding policies and student academic progress.
- Maintain currency on policies, procedures, and regulations pertaining to registration, transfer credit evaluation, course and degree requirements, graduation requirements, petitions, and other student services.
- Participate in the development and implementation of program policies and procedures such as grading policies, academic progress, mandatory student advisement, and advisement and admission for internal transfers, emphases, and minors.
- Assess targeted student or group needs and recommend programs or services. Assist in the design and delivery of student programs, services and special events.
- Assist in planning and coordinating student events and co-curricular programs such as commencement, new student welcome, orientation, academic information sessions, student support programs, student organizations, scholarships, and award ceremonies.
- Interface with faculty and staff to exchange and update information or to enlist support for program services.
- Assist in planning and administering special programs such as faculty advisor programs, peer tutorial or mentor groups, student organizations, and honors programs.
- Assist in providing leadership, guidance and supervision to student workers, volunteers and/or graduate assistants. Assist them in developing skills through the planning and coordination of services and activities.
- Perform other related duties as assigned or requested. The University reserves the right to add or change duties at any time.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in student affairs, student development, counseling, higher education, or other related field.
- 2+ year experience providing academic advisement to undergraduate students
- 2+ years of experience with increasing responsibilities working with undergraduate students in a higher education setting.
- Strong communication skills (interpersonal, written, verbal, presentation) to work with a variety of diverse constituents including students, families, faculty, and staff.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple programs/services and responsibilities simultaneously.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively to meet student needs and department priorities.
- Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive and confidential information within FERPA and University guidelines.
- Demonstrated ability to be flexible and adaptable in the face of changing priorities and fluctuating workloads.
- Demonstrated experience with office management communication software and tools and proficiency with Microsoft Office.
Anticipated Hiring Range:
The hourly rate range for this position is $29.30 - $37.87.
