Requirements
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Graduation from an accredited vocational nursing program is required.
- Passing the NCLEX-PN licensing examination is required.
- At least one year of experience in an acute care setting is required.
- Knowledge of patient care and patient needs is required.
- Keen observational, decision-making, and communication skills are required.
- Ability to follow orders and work independently within the scope of practice is required.
- A valid California Vocational Nursing license is required.
- Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider certification from the American Heart Association is required.
- Fire Life Safety Training from the City of Los Angeles is required; if not held at hire, it must be obtained within 30 days and renewed before expiration.
- Intravenous Therapy certification for Licensed Vocational Nurses is required for this department.
Responsibilities
- Assist the Registered Nurse in providing therapeutic care to a designated patient population under the Registered Nurse’s direction.
- Assist physicians and supervisors with day-to-day clinical care and arrange detailed patient care in primary care and orthopedics.
- Assist with implementing and evaluating patient-care delivery.
- Provide individualized direct patient care under the guidance of the clinical supervisor, Registered Nurse, athletic trainers, or physician.
- Perform nursing functions according to departmental policies, nursing-care standards, and licensure limitations.
- Obtain and record vital signs; administer medications and parenteral fluids, obtain specimens, and respond to emergencies under appropriate direction.
- Recognize changes in patients’ physical and mental conditions and notify the physician or nursing supervisor.
- Document patient history, medications, allergies, treatments, procedures, and billing data in the medical record.
- Alert appropriate personnel to security, fire, and other unsafe situations and report unusual occurrences to the supervisor.
- Stock supplies and clean rooms and equipment.
- Prepare patient charts, including x-rays and laboratory work, arrange special equipment, set up examination rooms, assist physicians with examinations, and monitor patient flow.
- Perform venipuncture using syringe, vacutainer, blood-culture, and fingerstick methods.
- Instruct patients on procedures, glucose-tolerance preparation, and specimen-collection techniques, and provide care for fainting or loss of consciousness.
- Provide coverage for the switchboard, appointment system, and reception area as needed.
- Clean, wrap, and autoclave instruments; set up surgical trays and assist surgeons during procedures.
- Assist with or transport patients to examination rooms or surgical suites and transport specimens to the laboratory and reports back.
- Maintain files and records and oversee equipment and office-supply inventory.
- Photocopy, collate, fax, distribute, mail, perform errands, and read and prioritize incoming mail.
- Handle or route incoming mail as appropriate and perform other assigned duties.
