Cambium develops advanced materials for defense and aerospace by using a platform that re-engineers polymers from first principles to create high-performance resins and composites. Its phthalonitrile resins are thermosets engineered for extreme environments with high service temperatures and strong thermal stability, used in missiles, space and satellites, and hypersonic aircraft. The company differentiates itself through a molecular-level design approach within a unified development platform that emphasizes survivability, performance, and manufacturability. Its goal is to provide durable, reliable materials that enable advanced systems to operate under demanding conditions.

What believers are saying

  • March 2026 U.S. contract extends laser and directed-energy protection to aircraft transparencies.
  • July 2026 Mooresville facility quadruples SHD capacity and shortens customer lead times.
  • May 2026 USC space launch proved two-week delivery of custom flight hardware.

What critics are saying

  • July 2026 expansion and January 2026 capital demand flawless scale-up and yields.
  • March 2026 government contracting ties growth to defense procurement timing and qualifications.
  • If SentinelOps or ApexShield fail qualification, Cambium becomes a science project, not a supplier.

What makes Cambium unique

  • January 2026’s $100M Series B included Lockheed Martin Ventures, validating defense credibility.
  • June 2026 ApexShield 3000 and July 2026 SentinelOps span heat and laser threats.
  • SHD acquisition plus Mooresville expansion creates integrated U.S.-U.K.-Europe composite manufacturing.

Cambium launches SentinelOps laser eye protection platform for pilots and military personnel

Cambium, an El Segundo-based advanced materials manufacturer, has launched SentinelOps, a laser eye protection and directed-energy protection technology platform. The first product is protective eyewear designed for commercial and military aviation applications. The platform addresses laser illumination incidents that pose risks to pilots and military personnel. The US Federal Aviation Administration logs tens of thousands of cockpit laser strikes annually, with Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, and Chicago amongst the highest-frequency corridors. SentinelOps technology provides protection across visible and near-infrared spectrum whilst maintaining colour fidelity and visual acuity. The technology can be adapted for eyewear, cockpit windows, and sensor platforms. The product was developed with support from BioMADE, a US Department of Defense organisation, and technical collaboration with Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division.

Cambium quadruples US manufacturing capacity with 60,000 sq ft North Carolina facility

Cambium, a US-based advanced materials manufacturer, is expanding its North Carolina facility to 60,000 square feet, quadrupling domestic production capacity for its SHD Composites division. The Mooresville site will integrate resin mixing, film, prepreg, testing and development capabilities, with operations starting later this year. The expansion follows earlier upgrades to SHD's UK facility, positioning Cambium among the world's top three prepreg producers. The company manufactures advanced composites for defence, aerospace, space and high-performance automotive sectors. CEO Simon Waddington said demand for high-performance materials is accelerating beyond traditional supply chains' capacity. "Programmes that once measured progress in years now demand weeks," he stated. SHD Composites President Brett Schneider emphasised that speed is engineered into their manufacturing approach, enabling them to maintain short lead times whilst scaling capacity.

Cambium launches ApexShield 3000 coating for hypersonic flight and extreme heat up to 427°C

Cambium has launched ApexShield 3000, a high-temperature phthalonitrile coating designed for metallic and composite substrates in extreme thermal environments. The coating supports applications from hypersonic flight to electromagnetic interference shielding for electronics. ApexShield 3000 is a sprayable, solvent-based liquid that cures at temperatures as low as 215°C and delivers operational performance up to 315°C, with short-duration capability up to 427°C. The system requires no refrigerated storage and accepts conductive and non-conductive fillers for customised performance. The coating builds on Cambium's phthalonitrile portfolio, including ApexShield 1000, which reduced carbon-carbon parts fabrication cycles by 70-80% for hypersonic applications. Cambium combines AI-driven molecular design with materials science to accelerate production from prototype to full scale.

USC students launch rocket with Cambium's custom boattail, delivered in 2 weeks

Cambium Materials has successfully delivered a custom rocket component for a university space mission, marking its first aerospace deployment. The company produced a "boattail" aerodynamic shroud within two weeks of receiving specifications, with launch occurring four weeks later. The high-temperature materials enabled the USC Rocket Propulsion Lab to extend its payload bay length, a critical design advancement for future missions. This marks the first time university students have successfully launched and recovered a rocket as a space payload provider. Cambium's approach integrates molecular discovery, product development, certification and rapid manufacturing across the US and Europe under one roof. The company focuses on developing advanced materials for high-performance applications across multiple sectors, combining AI-driven molecular design with chemistry and materials science.
