Requirements
  • Bachelor’s Degree in environmental science, engineering, or a related field, 10 plus years of equivalent work experience.
  • One year or more relevant work experience in wastewater treatment or a similar industrial or construction setting.
  • Requires a valid driver’s license.
  • Must obtain and maintain a city driver's permit.
Responsibilities
  • Assist with tracking the status and cost of wastewater treatment plant rehab and upgrade projects.
  • Provide regular updates on the status of assigned projects and communicate to the Senior Engineer or division leadership regarding any potential challenges that could impact the completion of a project.
  • Complete procurement processes as required for assigned projects, utilizing the City’s financial software platforms.
  • Assist the Senior Engineer in planning, coordination, and completion of wastewater treatment plant rehab and upgrade projects and evaluations.
  • Assist in the planning and coordination of wastewater treatment equipment and technology pilots, demonstrations, evaluations, and chemical trials.
  • Review project documents including plans, specifications, and shop drawings for mitigation of risk and to ensure the maintenance of plant operations and provide comments to the project team.
  • Performs administrative tasks such as drafting scopes of work for service providers, processing purchase order requests, and processing invoices.
  • Coordinate closely with internal team members including engineering project management, treatment plant operations and maintenance professionals, biosolids, water quality, and continuous improvement professionals and procurement staff and external team members including engineering consultants, vendors, and contractors.
  • Assist the Senior Engineer with responding to urgent issues at the wastewater treatment facilities, including assistance with emergency response measures related to overflows, spills, or equipment failure.
  • Serve as a staff resource and point of contact for special projects throughout the Environmental Management division and Charlotte Water.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of standards regarding engineering principles and practices in order to protect operational reliability of the wastewater treatment process.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of Maintenance of Plant Operations (MOPO) plans for construction and rehabilitation projects in order to ensure operational reliability of the wastewater treatment plants.
  • Coordinate and conduct field investigations related to customer concerns related to the wastewater treatment facilities and activities.
  • Be a resource for emergency preparation and response.
  • Travel to and frequently perform duties at the seven wastewater treatment plants located throughout Mecklenburg County.
  • Supports the division’s environmental management program by performing work with a focus on environmental protection, customer service, and continual improvement, and assisting with corrective action investigations, efforts to meet division objectives, and continuous improvement projects.
  • Serve as project coordinator for the assigned project.
Desired Qualifications
  • Prefers candidate with a high degree of skill and expertise in wastewater treatment.
  • Prefers Certification from the NC Water Pollution Control System Operators Certification Commission (WPCSOC).
  • Prefers Certification as an Engineering Intern (or equivalent credentials in field of specialty).
