Requirements
  • A Bachelor's degree is required.
  • At least 3 years of relevant experience is required.
  • Extensive experience researching demographic trends and producing population estimates and projections.
  • Advanced knowledge of statistical software such as R and Stata, ArcGIS, and Excel.
  • Strong data management skills.
  • Ability to maintain relationships with students, government officials, and community-based organizations.
  • A Master's or PhD in demography, sociology, statistics, or a related field is preferred; candidates with a Master's degree must have at least 3 years of relevant experience.
Responsibilities
  • Direct the research agenda on Mississippi's demographic trends.
  • Work with federal, state, and local stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with the State Data Center's Applied Demographer, the Center for Population Studies Director, and state officials on Census data collection, outreach, and reporting, including participation in the Census Count Review Operation.
  • Produce population estimates and projections.
  • Act as a liaison between the State Data Center and the U.S. Census Bureau.
  • Produce public-facing research products on population trends.
  • Conduct research related to population, demography, and related topics.
  • Design, monitor, and execute project-specific experiments and identify and resolve technical issues.
  • Serve as a unit liaison and provide stakeholders with updates on project components and timelines.
  • Implement operating policies and procedures to comply with regulations, institutional policies, and unit objectives.
  • Monitor project-specific budgets.
  • Assist with proposals for externally funded research studies.
  • Prepare reports and publications.
  • Supervise and coordinate the day-to-day activities of staff and resolve routine personnel issues.
Desired Qualifications
  • Extensive experience with demographic theory and methods.
  • Advanced training in data analysis and visualization, including statistical software, ArcGIS, and Excel.
  • Experience with academic writing and publishing, including grant writing.
