Global electronics supply chains shift as India and Costa Rica secure over $2 billion in tech FDI.

Global electronics supply chains shift as India and Costa Rica secure over $2 billion in tech FDI. August 19, 2026 The global electronics and semiconductor manufacturing landscapes are undergoing a significant realignment as multinational corporations and sovereign governments seek to build more resilient supply chains. In two major developments, India and Costa Rica have secured substantial foreign direct investment (FDI) commitments aimed at diversifying production capacity away from traditional manufacturing hubs. According to Bloomberg, Foxconn (Hon Hai Precision Industry) has approved a $1 billion investment to construct a new electronics assembly facility in Karnataka, India. Reports from Reuters and The Economic Times indicate that this initiative is part of the company's broader strategy to diversify its global manufacturing footprint and expand its capacity outside of China. The investment is designed to leverage India's production-linked incentive (PLI) schemes, which aim to establish the country as a major hub for electronics manufacturing and export. By utilizing these state-backed incentives, Foxconn is positioning itself to capture growing regional demand while mitigating risks associated with over-concentration in single geographic markets. Simultaneously, Costa Rica is emerging as a key node in the Western hemisphere's high-tech supply chain. The Wall Street Journal reports that Costa Rica's Ministry of Foreign Trade has announced a combined $1.2 billion in FDI commitments from several US-based technology and electronics firms. These investments will be used to establish advanced semiconductor packaging and testing facilities within the country. According to Reuters, this development is supported in part by the US CHIPS Act's International Technology Security and Innovation (ITSI) Fund. The fund specifically seeks to build more resilient and geographically diverse supply chains within the Western hemisphere, aligning Costa Rica's industrial capabilities with US strategic economic security goals. The trade implications of these developments are profound for global logistics and component sourcing. For years, the electronics sector relied heavily on highly centralized supply chains. However, the introduction of programs like India's PLI scheme and the US ITSI Fund has altered the cost-benefit analysis for multinational firms. By subsidizing capital expenditures, these programs help offset the initial costs of establishing operations in emerging markets. Consequently, businesses are able to build redundant capacity, reducing the likelihood of severe disruptions to the global supply of consumer electronics and microchips. This trend is expected to foster new trade corridors, linking South Asia and Central America more directly to major consumer markets in North America and Europe. #Semiconductors #SupplyChain #ForeignDirectInvestment #TechTrade #GlobalManufacturing The International Trade Council is a global, peak-body, chamber of commerce that supports businesses and governments by providing resources, advocacy, and networking opportunities to promote international trade and foreign direct investment. Agility Robotics' $2.5B SPAC debut tests humanoid market at discount to $39B rival valuations

Agility Robotics is going public through a SPAC merger with Churchill Capital Corp XI at a $2.5bn valuation, significantly below private humanoid robotics rivals. The Oregon-based company expects to raise over $620m in proceeds, with the merger closing in Q4 2026. The valuation trails competitors substantially. Apptronik raised funds at above $5bn, whilst Figure AI closed Series C funding at a $39bn post-money valuation. Investors cite Agility's relatively weaker position on deployments and technology as justification for the discount. Agility has booked over $300m in multi-year revenue tied to roughly 1,000 robots, with 65,000 operational hours across nine customer facilities. However, analysts caution this backlog involves contracts for robots still in development, with cancellation provisions. Industry experts warn against overvaluing humanoid robotics relative to established automation technologies. The company's challenge lies in converting technological promise into repeatable deployments and demonstrable ROI whilst competing against proven automation alternatives already generating substantial revenue.

Foxconn to 'build up' manufacturing at Ohio plant in 2027.

Foxconn to 'build up' manufacturing at Ohio plant in 2027. by Staff Thursday, August 13, 2026 TAIPAI, Taiwan - Hon Hai Technologies, more commonly known as Foxconn, said Thursday it plans to increase its capital spending next year and boost manufacturing in Ohio in response to anticipated high demand for artificial intelligence systems. "In response to American localization needs, Texas, Wisconsin, Ohio and California will see build up in R&D and manufacturing capabilities" in 2027, the company said in a statement announcing its second-quarter earnings. "The group currently has no plans for direct equity financing and will maintain a sound capital structure to meet future operational and expansion needs." No other details were provided. Foxconn is in the process of transforming the former General Motors plant in Lordstown into a manufacturing hub for AI components and server racks. Last year, Foxconn sold the plant to SoftBank Group for $375 million, which is constructing a small data center at the plant. The plant - a 6.2 million-square-foot factory - shut down in 2019 and was then sold to Lordstown Motors Corp., which sold it to Foxconn in 2023. Foxconn said it would remain in the plant as a contract manufacturer to support the project. In November, SoftBank affiliate Crescent Dune LLC filed documents with the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency affirming its plans for an expansion project in Lordstown related to "manufacturing and assembly for modular data center and server manufacturing; assembly for IT server rack and servers; modular data center for IT, power distribution, HVAC, and related components." The filing also included a site map depicting an expansion area just north of the plant. According to reports at the time, SoftBank said it would invest up to $3 billion in Lordstown to manufacture components for OpenAI's data centers. Foxconn reported that revenue during the second quarter reached $77.5 billion. Net profit for the quarter was $1.87 billion. "Looking ahead to the third quarter, the traditional peak season, operations are expected to gradually pick up," the company said. "Overall, the July-September quarter is expected to see significant quarter-on-quarter growth and strong year-on-year growth. For the full year 2026, thanks to strong demand for AI servers and growth in smart consumer electronics, the outlook for strong growth remains unchanged." During the first half of 2026, revenue reached $144.4 billion, an increase of 35% compared with the same period last year. Net profit stood at $3.4 billion during the first half, an increase of 27% compared with the first half of 2025.
