- Work on a wide range of structural engineering projects involving steel, concrete, masonry, and wood structures. Projects may include conventional or archaic / antiquated structural systems
- Plan and conduct site investigations to document existing conditions and lead the development of investigation reports
- Prepare contract drawings and specifications for repair designs and the design of new structures
- Execute the construction administration phase of projects, including bid assistance, submittal review, site meetings, observations of completed work, etc.
- Serve as a manager on projects that may include: Condition assessments of existing buildings and other structures; Investigation of structural failures and adverse performance issues; Preparation of technical reports; Development of options analysis for clients to make informed decisions; Design of rehabilitation and restoration measures for existing structures and preparation of construction documents, including adaptive re-use; Structural design and detailing for new building and non-building structures
- Manage the work of younger staff and delegate tasks to them as appropriate
- Communicate directly with clients within context of assigned work
- Pursue and engage in professional activities for continued learning experience and to gain professional recognition
- Present technical findings at project meetings, conferences, and publications
- Actively contribute to internal technical training and mentoring

IIBEC honors Atrium on Commonwealth. The International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants (IIBEC) recognized the Atrium on Commonwealth with a 2026 Excellence in Building Enclosure Consulting (EBEC) Award in the Building Enclosure category. The award was presented on 14 March 2026 during IIBEC's International Convention & Trade Show in Sacramento. Simpson Gumpertz & Heger (SGH) provided building enclosure and structural engineering services for the project. SGH Principal Christopher Grey accepted the award on behalf of the project team. "Projects like this highlight the value of taking a strategic, long-term approach to existing buildings," said Chris. "By understanding the structure and its history, we were able to help the owner modernize the property in a way that will serve them well for years to come." Located at 1079 Commonwealth Avenue in Boston, the four-story concrete building was originally constructed in the early 20th century for the Packard Motor Car Company and later converted into apartments, serving as an early example of adaptive reuse in the city. SGH's involvement began in 2019 with an initial condition assessment and make-safe work. This evolved into parking garage and roof replacement projects, followed by a $100 million multiyear phased effort that included roof replacement, garage repairs, and facade recladding, coordinated with a full interior gut renovation. The project was a major success, transforming, renovating, and upgrading the approximately 300,000 sq ft building. SGH collaborated with Margulies Perruzzi (design architect), The Hamilton Company (owner and interior architect), and Hamilton Construction Management. In addition to the award recognition, several SGH team members participated in the convention, contributing to technical sessions and engaging with the building enclosure community.
Structural design expert Nick Wetzel joins SGH. Wetzel specializes in aerospace infrastructure and seismic engineering. Simpson Gumpertz & Heger (SGH) welcomes Nick Wetzel back to the firm as a Project Director, enhancing its design capabilities for aerospace infrastructure and specialty structures and bolstering its seismic engineering expertise. He joins SGH's Structural Engineering Division in Southern California, where he will partner closely with SGH peers and clients across the United States and globally. Nick specializes in managing and delivering complex aerospace projects from conception to construction. He has led multidisciplinary teams across architectural, structural, and civil disciplines to design new launch complexes and rocket testing facilities, as well as retrofit mission-critical facilities. This work spans new and existing steel and concrete systems, large hangars and support buildings, and specialized equipment and pipe support structures, including fast-tracked assessment, upgrade, and repair efforts. He also has extensive experience designing and retrofitting other critical structural systems, including considerations before and after large seismic events. Millennium Tower retrofit receives NCSEA, SEAOC, SEAONC Structural Engineering Excellence Awards. The Millennium Tower foundation upgrade project at 301 Mission Street in San Francisco continues to earn recognition for its innovative design and engineering achievement. The National Council of Structural Engineers Associations (NCSEA) honored the project with two top prizes in the 2025 Structural Engineering Excellence (SEE) Awards program. Led by Simpson Gumpertz & Heger (SGH), the project received the Award for Excellence in the Forensic/Retrofit/Rehabilitation category and was also named a co-winner of the Structure of the Year - 2025 Award, recognizing the most outstanding project across all categories. SGH Consulting Principal Ron Hamburger and SGH alum Lachezar Handzhiyski accepted the award at the 2025 Structural Engineering Summit on 16 October 2025. Earlier this year, the project also received top honors from the Structural Engineers Association of California (SEAOC) and the Structural Engineers Association of Northern California (SEAONC). SEAOC honored the project with the Excellence Award in the Retrofit/Alteration category and named it Project of the Year, the organization's highest distinction recognizing outstanding structural engineering achievement statewide. SEAONC bestowed an Engineering Excellence award in the Retrofit/Alteration category. The Millennium Tower is a 58-story luxury condominium completed in 2009. Located in downtown San Francisco, the building is founded on piles bearing in dense sands approximately 90 ft below grade, underlain by soft Bay Area clay soils. Over the following decade, the structure experienced approximately 17 in. of settlement and 17 in. of tilt toward the northwest - far exceeding initial geotechnical predictions. To address these issues, SGH developed a technically innovative and less invasive retrofit solution that involved installing 18 new 500-ton piles along the building's north and west sides, extending to bedrock to arrest further settlement and enable gradual recovery of tilt. The two-year effort was completed in September 2023 while the building remained occupied. Early monitoring results show that the retrofit has successfully stabilized settlement and initiated gradual tilt recovery, validating the design's effectiveness. "Delivering this retrofit required creative thinking and steadfast teamwork," said SGH Consulting Principal Ron Hamburger, who led the project. "Despite the complexity and intense public attention, the project team remained focused on the technical issues and executed a solution that stabilized the structure and restored trust in its long-term performance." SGH partnered with the Millennium Tower Association, Slate Geotechnical Consultants, and Shimmick Construction to complete the project.
