Requirements
  • A Bachelor of Science degree in chemical, mechanical, process, or related engineering.
  • Approximately 10–15 or more years of process or process-safety engineering experience, including independently facilitating full HAZOP/PHA studies.
  • Multi-site or international process safety experience and working knowledge of PSM elements, including PHA, PSSR, PSI, the mechanical integrity interface, and incident investigation.
  • Willingness to travel internationally approximately 25–40%.
  • Ability to apply hazard-evaluation and risk-ranking methods including HAZID, HAZOP, what-if, and LOPA, and translate findings into risk-based, prioritized recommendations.
  • Knowledge of thermal energy storage hazards, including high-temperature stored thermal energy, high-voltage and arc-flash hazards, pressure and steam systems, and stored-energy isolation.
  • Ability to apply the functional safety lifecycle under IEC 61511, including SIF/SIL determination and verification, and select and justify appropriate RAGAGEP.
  • Ability to evaluate process safety program effectiveness using leading and lagging indicators, API 754-style tiered metrics, audit findings, and global action-closure data.
  • Ability to harmonize multi-jurisdiction regulatory and corporate requirements into a global standard with defensible local adaptation.
  • A track record of independently challenging designs and operating plans on a risk basis, including authority to flag and halt unacceptable risk without authoring the controls under review.
  • Experience leading cross-functional hazard-evaluation teams across cultures and time zones and driving consensus on risk and safeguards in geographically distributed settings.
  • Ability to prioritize the highest-risk processes and overdue safety-critical actions for global resources and attention.
  • Ability to influence and escalate across line and leadership without direct authority, with experience mentoring engineers and serving as a principal technical reviewer.
Responsibilities
  • Own and scale Rondo’s global risk-based PSM program, including periodically redetermining regulatory applicability across jurisdictions.
  • Own the global PHA methodology and standard covering HAZID, HAZOP, and LOPA; personally facilitate high-risk and complex studies; and oversee local facilitators to maintain consistent quality worldwide.
  • Own the global PHA action register and governance, assign accountability to line and engineering owners, track actions to completion, and escalate overdue high-risk actions to leadership.
  • Serve as the mandatory process safety reviewer within the Management of Change process, screen changes for process safety impact, and trigger PHA revalidation where required.
  • Own Pre-Startup Safety Review and maintain Process Safety Information as the system of record.
  • Build process safety competency across the global organization by developing and delivering HAZOP/PHA leader and team-member training and establishing a qualified network of local facilitators and process safety champions.
Desired Qualifications
  • First-of-a-kind or novel-technology hazard analysis experience where no established RAGAGEP exists.
  • Energy storage, batteries, power generation, or high-temperature/molten-media experience.
  • Hands-on functional safety experience, including FMEDA, SIL verification, and SIS design.
  • Human and Organizational Performance fluency.
  • Functional safety experience under IEC 61511 or TÜV Functional Safety Engineer certification.
  • CCPSC certification.
  • Experience harmonizing process safety programs across jurisdictions, including Seveso and WHS Major Hazard Facility regimes.

Batteries Made To LastAs the world electrifies and switches to renewable energy, the need for more energy storage grows. This is in part driven by the switch to EVs, but also due to the intermittent nature of renewable production.This can be partially compensated by other low-carbon sources of energy, like hydropower or nuclear, or maybe geothermal energy in the future. Still, advocates for green energy would by far prefer to see low-cost solar (and wind) be the basis of our energy systems.This creates a demand for batteries with fundamentally different characteristics than for mobility.EVs need very energy-dense batteries that are light enough in weight and small enough in volume to be carried in the frame of a car. Durability is a concern, but as long as the battery can function for 10-15 years, this is likely in line with the durability of the rest of the car's components.In contrast, energy storage batteries are much less constrained by weight or volume. However, they are definitely constrained by cost, as they are essentially an additional cost to the production of green energy and the power grid.One way to reduce the cost of energy storage is to use less expensive material than lithium for building the battery. According to the US Department of Energy, industrial process heat is the use of thermal energy to produce, treat, or alter manufactured goods. It is the most significant source of energy use and greenhouse gas emissions in the industrial sector, accounting for about 50% of all onsite energy use and 30% of greenhouse gas emissions. Process heating systems are emissions-intensive because fossil fuel combustion provides 95% of industrial heat across the manufacturing sector.Process heating systems raise or maintain the temperature of materials involved in the manufacturing process, such as the melting of scrap in electric arc furnaces to make steel, separating components of crude oil in petroleum refining, drying paint in automobile manufacturing, or processing food for safe consumption.
