Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required for the Certified Medical Assistant pathway.
  • Completion of an accredited medical assisting program is required for the Certified Medical Assistant pathway.
  • One of the listed Certified Medical Assistant credentials is required: American Medical Technologist, American Association of Medical Assistants, National Health Career Association, MedCA Certified Clinical & Administrative Medical Assistant (MA1), National Association for Health Professionals, or National Center for Competency Testing.
  • For the Patient Care Technician pathway, at least one year of work experience in a 0.6 FTE Patient Care Technician I position at MUSC Charleston or one year of patient-care work experience in a healthcare facility is required, unless an alternative qualification applies.
  • For the Patient Care Technician pathway, an alternative qualification is a college degree, active enrollment in nursing school with completion of Nursing Fundamentals from an accredited institution, active enrollment in an accredited healthcare-related field, or Nursing Assistant/Medical Assistant or equivalent training.
  • Basic Life Support certification is required within two weeks of hire and must thereafter be maintained.
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification or American Red Cross Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers certification is required.
  • Ability to perform the physical functions of the job, including standing, sitting, walking, climbing stairs, bending, squatting, kneeling, reaching, repetitive hand and limb movements, and lifting or carrying up to 50 pounds unassisted.
  • Ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force for patient transfers and equipment movement.
  • Ability to maintain corrected 20/40 vision, recognize objects at varying distances, discriminate colors, and demonstrate depth perception and peripheral vision.
  • Ability to maintain hearing acuity with correction and tactile sensory function.
  • Ability to deal effectively with stressful situations.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts and overtime as required.
  • Ability to work in a latex-safe environment.
  • Ability to qualify physically for respirator use initially and as required for selected positions.
Responsibilities
  • Perform multi-skilled activities to support a decentralized, patient-centered approach to patient care and achieve desired outcomes.
  • Provide patient-care support under the direct supervision of a registered nurse.
Desired Qualifications
  • One year of patient-care experience is preferred for the Certified Medical Assistant pathway.
