Responsibilities
  • Is able to perform all Blood Bank procedures required for the safe issuing of blood. This will include performing cross matches, perform type and screens (tube and solid phase methodology), issuing units, performing antibody panels, DAT workups, donor work-ups utilizing ISBT labeling system, preparation of components, and process blood received from outside facilities. Able to utilize the Blood Bank section of the LIS computer system. Perform any other functions required for the smooth running of the Blood Bank section of the laboratory.
  • Performs and results all automated and manual Chemistry procedures, including the ability to troubleshoot Chemistry instruments. Is able to perform blood gas testing. Is able to utilize the Chemistry section of the LIS computer system. Perform any other functions required for the smooth running of the Core Laboratory section of the laboratory
  • Performs and results all automated and manual Hematology procedures. Has the ability to troubleshoot and maintain all Hematology instruments. Is able to perform coagulation studies and CBC’s with differentials. Is able to perform body fluid analysis, including crystals, cell counts and differentials. Is able to perform peripheral smears for blood parasites. Is able to utilize the Hematology section of the LIS computer system. Will be able to perform any other tasks required for the smooth running of the Hematology section of the Laboratory
  • Performs all aspects of Microbiology planting and processing of send-out tests. Has the ability to perform PCR testing, reading plates, blood cultures, performing automated and manual susceptibility testing and performing gram stains. Is able to troubleshoot Microbiology instruments. Is able to perform Mycology, including mold and yeast identification. Is able to perform both wet and microscopic Urinalysis testing. Is able to utilize the Microbiology section of the LIS computer system. Will be able to perform any other tasks required for the smooth running of the Microbiology section of the Laboratory
  • Organizational skills: Organizes work during heavy workloads being able to multi-task to expedite patient care. Keeps the work area clean and organized
  • Communication skills: Notes critical results, calling results in the proper time frame. Maintains open communication with physicians, nursing staff and co-workers. Consults with supervisor if with supervisor if needed to resolve technical problems that may arise
  • Maintains all appropriate competencies and continuing education requirements. May review a technical article or present an educational session at a staff meeting. Assists with teaching the students and orienting new employees
  • Performs all quality control and participates in quality assurance monitors. Assists the supervisor with reviewing of policies and procedures as necessary
