- A sound knowledge and background in geriatric, rehabilitation, or long-term care nursing, including activation, nursing, and personnel administration.
- Knowledge of the Fixing Long-Term Care Act and Regulations; the appropriate sections of the Health Disciplines Act; the Occupational Health and Safety Act; the Pharmacy Act; the Food and Drugs Act (Canada); the Controlled Substances Act (Canada); the Health Promotion and Protection Act; the Personal Health Protection Act; the Coroners Act; College of Nurses of Ontario Standards of Practice; and other pertinent federal, provincial, and municipal statutes influencing nursing-home and nursing-department operations.
- A current Certificate of Competence from the College of Nurses of Ontario and membership in good standing.
- Provide professional nursing care to residents in accordance with required medical care and professional nursing practice.
- Provide direction to Personal Support Workers as defined by the College of Nurses Standard of Practice for Working with Unregulated Health Care Workers.
- In collaboration with the Registered Nurse, implement AgeCare policies and procedures on the unit and provide input into their revision within the residence and unit.
- Liaise with physicians and other health care team members, including external health care partners, and in the absence of the Registered Nurse immediately notify the physician of significant changes in resident status.
- Work with other health care team members to ensure residents’ care needs are met.
- Provide direction to Personal Support Workers on the care team.
- Participate in shift reports with health care team members, ensuring that all team members are informed of changes in resident status.
