Requirements
  • Must have an Associate Degree in Applied Science.
  • Must have three years of Ophthalmic Technician experience.
  • Must have 2 years ophthalmic photography experience.
  • Must have current Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) certification from accrediting entity e.g. JCAHPO within six months of placement in the role.
  • Must have current healthcare provider BLS for Healthcare Providers certification from one of the following: American Heart Association, American Red Cross, Military Training Network.
Responsibilities
  • Coordinates a subspecialty clinical practice in the Department of Ophthalmology at PHHS
  • Develops, cultivates, and maintains working relationships with COPC's and OPC at PHHS
  • In conjunction with the ophthalmological subspecialty staff, determines goals and objectives for optimum service to patients and their family members
  • Monitors success and notes areas of clinic improvement (such as appointment availability), and identifies ways to improve work processes, patient service and satisfaction, recommending to manager areas of improvement within the Parkland network
  • Designs and executes an effective system of internal controls, ensuring efficient clinic-patient flow, and synergetic provider-patient scheduling
  • Attends in-services and continuing education clinics to ensure on-going certification. Integrates knowledge gained into current work practices.
  • Identifies ways to improve work processes, customer service and satisfaction, recommending to supervisor areas of potential improvement.
  • Maintains knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, laws, and guidelines that impact the ophthalmic area. Develops effective internal controls that promote adherence to applicable state/federal laws, and the program requirements of accreditation agencies and federal, state, and private health plans. Seeks advice and guidance as necessary to ensure proper understanding.
  • Delegates appropriate tasks and assignments to the Ophthalmology Assistant staff and conducts follow-up to assure completion and accuracy of delegated tasks.
  • Assists Nurse Manager with evaluations of Ophthalmology Assistants staff by providing objective input as appropriate. Daily oversight of multiple clinical sites for appropriate staffing. Filling as an Technician when needed. Making changes/improvements as needed. Troubleshooting clinic equipment issues/problems; communicating with Clinical Engineering or vendor when needed.

  • Must be able to interact with co-workers and patients to expedite and organize patient care.
  • Must be able to ensure appropriate staff assignments to cover multiple providers and their individual needs.
  • Must be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of ocular screening devices and photography devices.
  • Must be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of ocular surgical instruments and reconstructive surgeries that are performed on patients.
  • Must be able to perform work tasks of moderate complexity involving independent decisions concerning adherence to policy, sequence of work or similar matters of daily requirements of job.
  • Must be able to maintain records of all necessary data.
  • Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skill in meeting age related and handicapped patients' needs.
  • Must be able to demonstrate skill in providing ocular screening for all types of Ophthalmology patients.
  • Must fulfill Super User responsibilities for blood glucose.
  • Must be able to coordinate training of new Ophthalmic Assistants.
