Requirements
  • At least two years of experience in court reporting.
  • Certification as a National Court Reporters Association Registered Professional Reporter (RPR) or equivalent (e.g., Certified Verbatim Reporter (CVR) by National Verbatim Reporters Association) and proper credentials provided within one week upon client request.
  • Consecutive employment in a position with comparable responsibilities within the past five years.
  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalency; completion of apprentice and internship training in court reporting; sufficient coursework to obtain certification as a professional court reporter from a recognized licensing or accrediting agency or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to accurately report court proceedings at speeds of 225 words per minute and translate takedown from steno to English.
  • Knowledge and understanding of laws, rules, and regulations governing court reporting and transcription; ability to use court reporting and transcription equipment; knowledge of general office practices, procedures, equipment, and technology.
  • Compliance with National Court Reporters Association standards; maintaining exhibits and documentary evidence; effective communication with counsel, coworkers, supervisors, and the public.
  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and related tools; ability to use email and standard office software.
  • Notary license held where applicable; real-time certification through NCRA or equivalent; ability to administer oaths; English fluency to read and read portions of transcripts during proceedings; secure handling of confidential information.
  • Eligibility for security clearance up to Top Secret or “Q” clearance; ability to meet varying background investigation requirements.
  • Must be able to travel within approximately 50 miles of Norfolk, Virginia, and work at locations including Norfolk, Suffolk, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Hampton, Newport News, and Williamsburg/James City County; flexibility to provide services at Agency offices, ships, or other venues.
Responsibilities
  • Provide verbatim transcription of testimony for a range of proceedings including fact-findings, review boards, hearings, administrative investigations, Inspector General investigations, depositions, arbitrations, and similar proceedings; transcription may be face-to-face, remote via video teleconference, telephone, or remote platforms such as Microsoft Teams or Zoom for Government.
  • Perform real-time transcription of depositions and arbitrations; stenographically record and produce accurate verbatim records of all proceedings; transcribe, proof, and prepare transcripts for distribution using court reporting tools and platforms; maintain exhibits during depositions; collaborate with scopists and proofreaders for transcript completion; test the virtual litigation platform and provide feedback; attend depositions and proceedings (online/in-person) requiring written transcripts; provide rough drafts of transcripts to counsel and parties upon request; provide real-time service during live depositions when requested; prepare final transcript per client request and submit final ASCII via online portal; proofread transcripts for correct spelling; request clarification for inaudible statements; provide transcripts of proceedings upon request; transcribe recorded proceedings in established formats.
  • Record verbatim proceedings using stenograph machines; prepare accurate final transcripts; ensure confidentiality and discretion; work with client contracting officers and engagement teams; meet milestones and delivery schedules; accommodate client turnaround requirements.
  • Collaborate with team members and client representatives; participate in equipment testing and platform improvements; ensure thorough and professionally documented deliverables; manage or coordinate with scopists and proofreaders.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with Administrative Investigation Board (AIB) process, Equal Opportunity Hearing, Merit Systems Protection Board (MSPB), or arbitration hearings is preferred.
  • Prior experience with government or defense sector court reporting environments; ability to obtain security clearance; advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and court reporting software; notary and real-time certifications preferred.
  • Strong English reading and writing skills; ability to administer oaths; high level of professionalism and discretion.
