Requirements
  • Basic knowledge of animal care, demonstrated through care of household pets, farm animals, or 4-H animals.
  • Ability to read, write, and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written formats with technical and professional staff.
  • Ability to assist with research support at the level of individual training.
  • Ability to perform general animal husbandry duties and assist investigative staff as requested.
  • A valid driver's license and ability to drive Division of Comparative Medicine and Oregon National Primate Research Center vehicles on and off campus.
  • Ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds and lift objects weighing approximately 42 pounds to shoulder height.
  • Ability to push and pull heavy wheeled equipment such as cage racks and loaded carts.
  • Ability to move unassisted through animal housing areas in several separate indoor and outdoor buildings.
  • Sufficient dexterity and manual skills to safely perform or learn basic animal husbandry, animal handling, and health care procedures, including feeding, sanitization, animal capture and restraint, medication administration, and collection of body fluids and tissues.
  • Ability to work in conditions involving wet or slick surfaces, exposure to animals and zoonotic agents, hazardous chemicals, sanitizing chemicals, and areas requiring fit testing and use of an N-95 respirator.
Responsibilities
  • Conduct routine animal husbandry procedures, including feeding and watering animals.
  • Capture, restrain, identify, sex, and transport laboratory animals in support of veterinary or investigative procedures.
  • Sanitize animal housing, shelters, equipment, and facilities through sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, washing, and disinfection.
  • Assist with animal health management, treatment, and diagnostic procedures such as weighing, tuberculosis testing, and blood collection.
  • Assist with facility maintenance, including replacing drinking water valves, preparing and painting surfaces, and replacing lighting tubes or bulbs.
  • Unload and store feed bags weighing 25 to 50 pounds.
  • Assist with group-housed animal capture and processing.
  • Assist with care of animals in the nursery.
  • Provide animal care and environmental enrichment on weekends, during non-regular working hours, or on an overtime basis when required.
  • Inventory and request supplies.
  • Observe animals in all housing configurations, recognize abnormalities in physical condition or behavior, and report and record observations.
  • Recognize and report facility problems such as inappropriate room temperatures, leaking or broken water pipes, plugged drains, and damaged surfaces.
  • Operate animal-care equipment including cage washers, floor scrubbers, autoclaves, pressure washers, scales, and veterinary care instruments.
  • Interact professionally with research investigative staff to accomplish their needs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • Six months of related animal experience, certification at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician level, or two years of indirect laboratory animal experience.
