Requirements
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • One year of preoperative or post-anesthesia care unit experience is required.
  • Medical-surgical nursing experience is required.
  • Current state licensure to practice in good standing is required.
  • Successful completion of Basic Life Support or Basic Cardiac Life Support within 90 days of employment, or documentation of current certification, is required.
  • Successful completion of Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support within 90 days of employment, or documentation of current certification, is required.
  • Successful completion of Pediatric Advanced Life Support within 90 days of employment, or documentation of current certification, is required when pediatric care is included within the facility's scope of services.
Responsibilities
  • Promote the mission, vision, and values of SCA.
  • Assess patients' preoperative and postoperative status, including cardiovascular, respiratory and airway, neurological, hemodynamic, pain and comfort, and mental status needs.
  • Interpret information accurately from noninvasive and invasive monitors.
  • Describe the pathophysiology of commonly encountered disease processes and the physiology associated with anesthesia techniques and surgical or procedural interventions.
  • Apply the relevant scoring system and discharge criteria for patient transfer, including Aldrete, Modified Aldrete, Post Anesthesia Discharge Scoring System, and White scores, according to organizational policy.
  • Develop individualized perianesthesia plans of care.
  • Implement plans of care, including managing recovery from general, monitored, regional, and local anesthesia; protecting patients from positioning and other injuries; communicating status throughout the perianesthesia continuum; managing acute pain and comfort; safely administering medications; maintaining wound integrity, tissue perfusion, body systems, fluid and electrolyte balance, and normothermia; preventing infection; managing comorbid conditions and prescribed fluids; educating patients or designated support persons; involving them in perioperative and rehabilitation decisions; protecting rights, dignity, and privacy; and providing age-specific, culturally competent, ethical care within legal standards.
  • Evaluate patient progress toward outcomes.
  • Transfer care as needed.
  • Provide accurate, concise, and pertinent hand-off reports to other teammates.
  • Delegate tasks according to applicable nurse practice acts, nursing-board or professional-registration requirements, state laws, and job descriptions.
  • Document nursing care completely, accurately, and legibly.
  • Collaborate effectively with other disciplines as needed.
  • Participate in quality review and performance improvement projects.
  • Participate in the performance appraisal process.
  • Use problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills to foster effective work relationships.
  • Maintain required competencies and pursue professional growth.
  • Act as a patient advocate and maintain privacy and confidentiality of individuals and health information.
  • Comply with facility policies and procedures when providing patient care.
  • Participate in team meetings, trainings, and daily safety huddles.
  • Demonstrate fiscal responsibility.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
