What critics are saying

  • Port Washington referendum blocks future TIF financing for AI campus expansions in similar Midwest markets within 6–12 months.
  • Cascade of anti-data center referendums in Wisconsin and Midwest could delay or halt the $15B Stargate AI project in 12–18 months.
  • Energy cost revolts and utility rate hikes threaten $15B Stargate AI project profitability within 6–12 months due to resident electric bill rejection.

What makes Vantage Data Centers unique

  • Vantage delivers 64–150MW wholesale campuses with six-month white space delivery for hyperscalers.
  • Approximately 80% of capacity is contracted to hyperscalers under 10–15 year lease agreements.

Abu Dhabi's MGX closes $49B AI fund, exceeding target.

Abu Dhabi's MGX closes $49B AI fund, exceeding target. MGX Fund I has backed 14 companies to date, including OpenAI, SpaceX, Binance, TikTok, Khazna, and Vantage Data Centers. Abu Dhabi's state-owned AI investment firm MGX has closed what may be the world's largest AI fund to date. On Thursday, the firm announced that MGX Fund 1 secured $49 billion in commitments, exceeding its original $45 billion target. Launched to back initiatives in artificial intelligence and advanced technology globally, the fund has attracted investments from "an elite and diverse group of major institutional and private investors from the Gulf, North America, Asia, and Europe." "The firm launched Fund I to provide highly curated exposure to the AI thematic through disciplined investments in differentiated and restricted opportunities across the AI technology stack, including semiconductors, AI infrastructure, and AI and AI-enabling technologies and platforms," it said in a statement. To date, MGX Fund I has invested in 14 companies, including SpaceX, Binance, OpenAI, Khazna, TikTok, and Vantage Data Centers (North America), among others. In May, it participated in Anthropic's $65 billion Series H funding round, following its participation in the firm's earlier Series G raise. MGX is backed by the sovereign wealth fund Mubadala Investment Company and the AI and cloud computing group G42, and is chaired by Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed, Deputy Ruler of Abu Dhabi and National Security Adviser. As AI continues to grow at an exponential rate, investors flock to promising technologies and players. In Q1 2026, investors poured $300 billion into 6,000 startups globally, up over 150% quarter over quarter and year over year, according to Crunchbase data.

Board adopts moratorium on data center development.

Board adopts moratorium on data center development. The Port Washington data center is a $15 billion-plus artificial intelligence campus under construction by Vantage Data Centers. Known as the Lighthouse campus, the 672-acre site will host four centers spanning 2.5 million square feet with almost 1 gigawatt of IT capacity, creating up to 4,000 construction jobs and 300-plus permanent positions. (Kevin Passon | NEW Media) Only affects towns under county zoning rules Kevin Passon, Editor-in-Chief Members of the Shawano County Board on June 24 adopted a 12-month moratorium on the siting, construction, establishment and operation of data centers in the unincorporated towns in Shawano County that have approved the county's zoning authority. It does not affect any cities, villages or the towns of Almon, Bartelme, Belle Plaine, Hartland, Hutchins, Lessor, Pella, Richmond and Wescott, all of which have their own zoning laws. Shawano resident Nancy Cramer expressed concerns about potential environmental problems as well as nationwide societal issues. She touched on issues such as water shortages, pollution, heated water discharged back into lakes and rivers, noise pollution affecting people and wildlife, decreases in property values and increases in electric rates. "I do not feel that we can let them come to Shawano County and destroy our water, our hunting and fishing land, our tourism," Cramer said. She suggested the proposed one-year moratorium be extended to five years. Board Chairman Tom Kautza told her state law limits the length of a moratorium to one year. Fellow city resident Shirley Hinze said big tech companies are suing communities that adopt moratoriums. "These corporations like Microsoft have billions of dollars to come back after smaller communities like ours to force their issue," she said. Hinze said Shawano County also needs to concerned about what could happen in nearby Langlade County. "If you do a data center to the north, it will deplete the water that then comes down through us," she said. "As this water is restricted, it heads down to Lake Butte des Morts, where, of course, the sturgeon come out of to head north to Shawano dam to spawn." Hinze said Shawano County may not have the resources for a mega data center, but residents still need to aware of the issues and be concerned about what others might do. "I am totally against these data centers, because I do know what the impact will be on the environment," she said. Supervisor Kathy Luebke urged residents in the cities, villages and other towns in Shawano County to push their local officials to adopt a similar moratorium. Wisconsin town becomes first in the nation to pass referendum restricting AI data center development.

Wisconsin town becomes first in the nation to pass referendum restricting AI data center development. The measure requires voter approval before granting tax incentives over $10 million, following Vantage Data Centers' billion-dollar proposal. Voters revolt over soaring electric bills. A Wisconsin town became the first city in the nation to pass a referendum restricting artificial intelligence (AI) data center development after a vote Tuesday. Port Washington residents voted overwhelmingly in favor (66%) of a ballot measure that would require city leaders to obtain voter approval before granting tax incentives exceeding $10 million to developers. The ballot measure came after Vantage Data Centers announced intentions to develop a $15 billion artificial intelligence campus in collaboration with tech giants OpenAI and Oracle in October. The measure was developed by Great Lakes Neighbors United, a local grassroots organization that formed after the original Vantage Data Centers announcement. The organization released a statement celebrating the voting results. (Getty Images/Wanan Yossingkum) "Tonight, democracy worked the way it's supposed to," Great Lakes Neighbors United member Christiane Le Jeune said. "Over 1,000 residents signed the petition that put this measure on the ballot, and tonight Port Washington voters spoke with one clear voice. The people deserve a seat at the table when their tax dollars are on the line." While the measure will not affect the current deal with Vantage Data Centers, it places additional obstacles in the way of other developers, especially AI data organizations seeking tax incentives in the city. "We are not against development," co-founder Carri Prom said. "We are for development that the community understands, supports and has chosen together. Tonight proves that when citizens organize and engage, their voices can be heard." Fox News Digital reached out to Vantage Data Centers, OpenAI and Oracle for comment. The Vantage Data Centers project in Wisconsin was part of President Donald Trump's multibillion-dollar artificial intelligence infrastructure "Stargate" project that was announced shortly after his term began in January 2025. The initial investment for the project was $100 billion, with plans to expand to $500 billion over the next four years. The first data center built under the initiative was in Texas with plans to expand into other states. President Donald J. Trump announced the Stargate Project with Larry Ellison, chairman of Oracle Corporation and chief technology officer; Masayoshi Son, SoftBank Group CEO; and Sam Altman, OpenAI CEO, in the Roosevelt Room at the White House on Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2025, in Washington, D.C. (Sebastian Gollnow/picture alliance/Jabin Botsford/The Washington Post via Getty Images) Amid concerns about rising energy costs for maintaining data centers, Trump met with several tech leaders who pledged they will generate their own electricity to save taxpayers money.
