Requirements
  • High school or General Educational Development graduation is required.
  • Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program is strongly preferred for Level I.
  • Graduation from a Medical Assistant program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools is strongly preferred for Levels II through IV.
Responsibilities
  • Take medical histories and record vital signs.
  • Explain treatment procedures to patients and prepare patients for examinations and procedures.
  • Assist medical and nursing staff during examinations and procedures.
  • Collect and prepare laboratory specimens and perform basic laboratory tests in the clinic or office.
  • Take electrocardiograms, remove sutures and staples, and change sterile and non-sterile dressings.
  • Promote patient and family understanding of educational content and involvement in the plan of care, and document in the patient record.
  • Dispose of contaminated supplies and perform instrument processing, high-level disinfection, and sterilization of medical instruments.
  • Telephone prescriptions to a pharmacy, prepare and administer medications as directed by a physician, and authorize drug refills as directed.
  • Perform other clinical functions delegated and supervised by the physician.
  • Greet patients and answer telephones.
  • Schedule appointments, including arrival appointments in MaestroCare, check out patients, and schedule referrals.
  • Arrange hospital admissions and laboratory services.
  • Update and file patient medical records.
  • Complete insurance forms, handle billing and bookkeeping, receive copayments, and collect account balances.
  • Handle correspondence and order clinical and clerical supplies and forms.
  • Perform other administrative duties as directed.
  • Serve as a liaison for clinic activities such as Joint Commission and falls activities or participate in clinic committees.
