Health reporter – New Scientist

Position: Full- or part-time
Workplace type: Hybrid working, three days a week in our London office: 9 Derry Street, Kensington, London, W8 5HY
Salary: £50k-60k, depending on experience
Job Introduction
New Scientist is the world’s leading weekly science and technology magazine. We are seeking an experienced health reporter to cover the latest developments in physical and mental health, biomedicine, genetics, neuroscience and more.
The winning candidate will play a key role in shaping New Scientist’s health coverage. You will pitch, report and write high-quality news stories and analysis pieces for the magazine, website, and podcast, as well as writing in-depth features and working with other areas of the business, such as events, when required.
Our intention is for the position to begin in June, and we are happy to consider applications for part-time working.
Main Responsibilities:
- Stay on top of the latest developments in health
- Find exclusive, world-beating news stories
- Develop contacts and report on conferences
- Pitch stories to the news editors
- Consistently produce high-quality stories for the magazine, website, podcast and other platforms
- Contribute to other areas of the magazine such as features, comment and culture
Person Specification:
- At least five years’ experience in relevant reporting
- A passionate interest in health, and in science and technology more broadly
- Ideally, a scientific degree, but this is not essential
- A good understanding of media law
