Requirements
  • A high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) credential is required.
  • Must meet Center for Medicaid/Medicare Services-approved state or national certification requirements within the required state or CMS timeline.
  • Must complete all applicable state licensure, education, and training requirements.
  • Must successfully complete the organization’s dialysis training program.
  • Must successfully complete CPR certification.
  • Must have the physical ability to provide direct patient care, including heavy lifting and moving patients, assisting with ambulation, prolonged standing, bending, and handling dialysis solutions and equipment.
  • Must pass the Ishihara Color Blindness Test as a condition of employment; reasonable accommodations may be considered.
  • Must comply with infection control policies and procedures and applicable organizational policies.
Responsibilities
  • Provide safe and effective dialysis therapy under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse and in compliance with organizational, state, and federal requirements.
  • Set up and operate hemodialysis machines, including required pretreatment alarm testing and the Solution Delivery System.
  • Welcome assigned patients and inquire about their wellbeing since their last treatment.
  • Evaluate vascular access for patency, perform vascular access cannulation, administer heparin when delegated or permitted by state law, and monitor access pressures during treatment.
  • Obtain and document pre-treatment and post-treatment vital signs, weights, vascular access evaluations, and patient responses.
  • Initiate and discontinue dialysis treatments according to prescribed orders and established procedures, including blood-flow and dialysate-flow settings, reinfusion, hemostasis, and dressings.
  • Evaluate intradialytic problems, provide prescribed interventions, monitor patient response, and report significant changes or unusual findings to the registered nurse or supervisor.
  • Calculate and enter dialysis-machine programming for ultrafiltration goals, treatment time, and ultrafiltration modeling as prescribed.
  • Ensure required safety alarms, including Narrow Venous Limits, are enabled.
  • Record accurate and timely treatment information on hemodialysis treatment sheets and complete applicable progress notes.
  • Obtain prescribed laboratory tests and collect, label, prepare, store, and arrange courier collection of laboratory specimens.
  • Clean blood spills and disinfect dialysis machines, chairs, equipment, and surrounding areas according to facility policy.
  • Prepare, organize, and use supplies and equipment efficiently to prevent wastage.
  • Monitor patients performing self-care under registered-nurse supervision.
  • Assist in training applicable direct patient-care staff under nurse supervision.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and orderly treatment environment.
  • Complete and document participation in Continuous Quality Improvement activities and enter treatment data into the designated clinical application.
  • Review treatment sheets for completeness, ensure nursing signatures are documented, and correct or route omitted entries for completion.
  • Prepare initial patient charts for admission and compile paperwork for chart placement.
  • Collect information for infection-control audits and reinforce infection-control practices and education for patients and families as directed.
  • Follow newly admitted patients through their first four weeks of dialysis and coordinate transitional dialysis care.
  • Reinforce education about treatment, care, home dialysis products, and treatment options, including demonstrating peritoneal dialysis setup.
  • Coordinate with appropriate staff to support the patient experience and schedule required disciplines.
  • Set up and perform treatments on machines used in the transitional care unit.
  • Assist with coordinating the transition to the patient’s chosen dialysis modality.
  • Assist with supply ordering and inventory for the transitional care unit.
  • Travel between assigned facilities and community locations and attend regional, business-unit, or corporate meetings when required.
