Requirements
  • Have enough technical depth in physics or an adjacent field to evaluate whether campaign outputs are real, novel, and significant and to work effectively with the research team.
  • Have a technology transfer and intellectual property management background, including experience taking results through filing and publication, managing prosecution dockets, or developing in-house intellectual property strategy.
  • Have run a research program with prioritization and kill mechanisms under a budget and against a deadline.
  • Have standing relationships with credible experts across several physics subfields.
  • Be able to determine whether a result contains patent-eligible subject matter or is a law of nature and to assess patentability accurately.
  • Have experience maintaining disclosure and publication boundaries under pressure.
  • Understand where artificial intelligence systems produce insight versus plausible nonsense and use verification to distinguish them.
  • Be able to work with controlled unclassified technical data and comply with applicable United States export control requirements.
Responsibilities
  • Map the landscape of open physics problems the platform can reach and decide where to allocate campaign time.
  • Run broad exploratory probes, concentrate effort on fertile areas, and stop campaigns that are not converting.
  • Defend the live research portfolio allocation and its tradeoffs.
  • Create written rules for routing results to publication, patent filing, trade secret protection, or open source.
  • Determine whether results contain eligible subject matter, whether they can be reverse-engineered, whether prior contracts affect disposition, and whether infringement could realistically be detected and pursued.
  • Read and apply commercial agreements when deciding how results should be handled.
  • Ensure patent filings precede public disclosure.
  • Build and maintain a network of outside experts across relevant physics subfields.
  • Establish reviewer safeguards including non-disclosure agreements, export screening, conflict screening, and protocols addressing inventive contributions and ownership.
  • Route provisional results through external validation before further action.
  • Manage validated results through publication submission, peer review, and revision.
  • Establish disclosure intake, triage, and a patent filing cadence.
  • Direct outside counsel on intellectual property strategy and priority while counsel drafts and prosecutes filings.
  • Keep the intellectual property portfolio aligned with where value is captured and maintain its boundary against open-source releases.
  • Maintain the portfolio in a form that technical diligence teams can evaluate.
  • Build records of human contribution to invention conception into campaign operations.
Desired Qualifications
  • Editorial or program committee experience at a major venue.
  • Experience with export control compliance and sensitive technology research and development.
  • Being a named inventor on issued patents.
  • Familiarity with compute infrastructure on the ground and in orbit, energy, and sensing and instrumentation.
