Requirements
  • Successfully complete the State of Florida Criminal History Background Check requirements and meet the Association’s background-screening policies.
  • Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Have knowledge of exercise equipment, general weight lifting, health and wellness, and the ability to demonstrate these safely.
  • Refrain from diagnosing injuries, offering medical advice, or dispensing or endorsing commercial health products, including nutritional supplements, vitamins, performance-enhancing substances, and pain relievers.
  • Complete the required Level 2 background screening through the Florida Care Provider Background Screening Clearinghouse.
  • Maintain CPR, First Aid, and automated external defibrillator certifications.
  • Complete the YMCA’s Blood Borne Pathogens training annually.
  • Complete the YMCA’s Child Sexual Abuse Prevention training annually.
  • Have one year or more of experience in fitness.
  • Follow staff safety requirements and cleaning protocols.
Responsibilities
  • Deliver safe and effective instruction on exercise equipment and interact with members using the wellness facility.
  • Welcome and greet members, learn their names, needs, and goals, and interact with them when possible.
  • Assist members with machine usage, workouts, and appropriate exercise guidance without giving unsafe or inappropriate advice.
  • Encourage first-time users to complete the orientation process and ensure all members complete the medical form.
  • Refer medical conditions requiring further investigation or physician approval to the Executive, Wellness, or Program Director.
  • Ensure members use cardiovascular and weight-training machines properly.
  • Circulate through the facility and remain visible to members.
  • Give facility tours as needed to assist Membership Services staff.
  • Maintain neat and orderly sign-up sheets and assist members with transitions on and off equipment during busy periods.
  • Follow the cleaning schedule and refill cleaning bottles as needed.
  • Identify equipment maintenance issues, place out-of-order signs on malfunctioning equipment, and inform the Executive, Wellness, or Program Director.
  • Ensure participants wear appropriate exercise attire and footwear.
  • Monitor exercise form and technique when demonstrating exercises.
  • Return equipment to its proper location after each shift, including restacking weights correctly.
  • Wash, dry, and fold towels as needed.
  • Find substitutes for missed scheduled shifts and communicate the substitute to the supervisor promptly.
  • Attend mandatory staff meetings.
  • Use the time clock, monitor the timesheet, and report corrections to the supervisor promptly.
  • Uphold staff safety requirements and cleaning protocols throughout the day.
  • For opening shifts, secure facility keys, report lost keys, open the facility on time, and ensure electronic cardiovascular equipment is ready for use.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Perform a range of exercise activities requiring full range of motion, manual and finger dexterity, and hand-eye coordination.
  • Lift up to 50 pounds and actively demonstrate exercise equipment.
