Requirements
  • A bachelor's or higher degree in clinical laboratory technology.
  • A bachelor's or higher degree with a major in biology, chemistry, or the physical sciences, plus an advanced certificate in clinical laboratory technology.
  • Education and training sufficient to qualify for licensure as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist before 2009 under New York State Education Regulation 79-13.4.
  • At least 5 years of cellular therapy or stem cell laboratory experience and 3 years of managerial experience.
  • Experience writing standard operating procedures and assessing competency.
  • Experience evaluating staff, including discipline, hiring, firing, and annual performance appraisals.
  • A relevant certification, such as Medical Technologist certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology.
  • A New York State Department of Health Medical Technologist license or New York State Department of Health Restricted license in Cellular Therapy is required.
  • Strong understanding of cellular therapy techniques, medical terminology, regulatory requirements, quality control principles, and laboratory safety practices.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and the ability to discuss patient test results and donor and product qualification of cell therapy products with patients' physicians.
  • Knowledge of donor qualification requirements for cellular therapy products.
  • Ability to maintain accurate paper and electronic records, including patient charts, billing and coding records for procedures, staff performance appraisals, and laboratory expenditures.
  • Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent leadership, verbal and written communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to train and mentor staff, with strong problem-solving and analytical abilities.
  • Cultural competency and the ability to communicate effectively in a culturally sensitive manner with individuals and groups from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to work under pressure while maintaining staff morale.
Responsibilities
  • Oversee the daily operations of the cellular therapy laboratory, ensuring quality, compliance, and efficacy in the processing, cryopreservation, storage, and distribution of cellular therapy products.
  • Supervise day-to-day laboratory activities, ensuring smooth workflows and managing personnel, equipment, and supplies.
  • Implement and maintain quality control and quality assurance systems, validate new procedures, and ensure compliance with FACT, CLIA, FDA, and other regulatory standards.
  • Train and supervise laboratory personnel, including conducting performance evaluations and competency assessments.
  • Ensure adherence to regulations related to safety, patient confidentiality, and product handling.
  • Oversee supplies and reagent inventory, equipment maintenance and calibration, and proper documentation.
  • Provide technical guidance to staff, troubleshoot equipment issues, and participate in process validation and optimization.
  • Communicate with clinical teams and Medical and Laboratory Directors to ensure information flow and resolve problems.
  • Assist the Laboratory Director in identifying process improvements, developing and implementing procedures, and contributing to continuous improvement of laboratory operations.
