Requirements
  • Twelve months of registered nurse experience in a healthcare environment.
  • A registered nurse Texas state license or compact licensure, with a permanent Texas license required within 60 days if establishing Texas residency.
  • Basic Life Support certification or instructor certification from the American Heart Association.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification or instructor certification from the American Heart Association within four months.
  • Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English to perform essential job functions, particularly those affecting patient or employee safety or security.
  • Strong assessment, organizational, and problem-solving skills, including the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and role components.
  • Ability to function independently and exercise judgment when interacting with physicians, the interprofessional care team, patients, and families.
  • Critical thinking and clinical judgment skills sufficient to work autonomously under the Nurse Practice Act.
  • Proficiency in time management.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft products, including Outlook.
Responsibilities
  • Provide professional nursing care and direct patient care to a diverse patient population, including patients with varied and complex needs.
  • Conduct nursing assessments, assist with examinations and treatments, provide patient education, and maintain medical records.
  • Communicate and collaborate with physicians and the interprofessional healthcare team to coordinate efficient, compassionate, quality care and achieve treatment outcomes.
  • Use clinical competence and technology when administering medications, performing procedures, and managing emergencies.
  • Act as a patient and family advocate to monitor and maintain patient rights.
  • Participate in or lead unit and shared governance initiatives and contribute to service-line or hospital-wide initiatives in partnership with management.
  • Use therapeutic communication, including active listening and teaching, to establish relationships with patients, families, and the interprofessional healthcare team and collaborate on plans of care.
  • Implement staff education specific to patient populations and unit processes.
  • Follow patient- and family-centered care standards and cultural diversity and inclusion principles.
  • Develop, update, and communicate plans of care, including discharge plans, in partnership with patients, families, and the interprofessional healthcare team.
  • Prioritize care based on patient needs, abilities, and preferences, and advocate for patients and families to identify and resolve clinical and ethical concerns.
  • Provide patient teaching, evaluate patient comprehension, and adapt teaching methods accordingly.
  • Follow nursing-process standards of care and regulatory and professional-practice requirements.
  • Identify practice-improvement opportunities using research-based evidence to achieve core-measure and patient-safety outcomes, supported by accurate documentation.
  • Provide and modify care for complex patients and coordinate care with the interprofessional team based on patient-condition evaluations.
  • Improve quality and safety through near-miss reporting and collaboration with the interprofessional healthcare team.
  • Manage time independently, document care promptly, minimize incidental overtime, and prioritize daily tasks.
  • Provide input into unit resource utilization, including capital and operational budget needs.
  • Contribute to department financial targets by decreasing length of stay and optimizing efficiency.
  • Identify and present opportunities for innovation, efficiency, and improvement in patient care or unit operations using evidence-based literature.
  • Offer solutions through evidence-based practice and performance-improvement projects and shared governance activities.
  • Champion new care pathways or service-line implementation and identify trends, improvement opportunities, and practice changes.
  • Research changes and present options to shared governance and leadership.
  • Serve as a charge nurse or preceptor to students or new employees when assigned.
  • Respond to on-call requirements during emergencies and travel within the Houston metropolitan area when required.
