Why AI agents need a zero trust foundation. Editor's Note: This is Part 2 of How AI is Changing Enterprise Security, a three-part video interview with Swamy Kocherlakota, executive vice president, agentic AI startup at Zscaler, produced jointly by Zscaler and FastForward. This installment looks at Making sense of AI agents. As agents proliferate in the enterprise, some believe it will require a new approach to security, but a long-understood method, zero trust, can help establish a baseline as companies layer on new AI-driven approaches. People throw around the agentic term pretty freely, but Zscaler's Swamy Kocherlakota says agents are not one thing, but exist on a spectrum. "It can be something that you go to a web page and you're having a conversation with an agent about what to buy, what to look for, all the way to autonomous agents," he said in a recent video interview with FastForward. Kocherlakota said that the zero trust approach involves several key elements. "The number one question is: Who are you? What are you trying to do? What is the risk? What is your intent? And then policy allows you to say you're allowed to do that or not," he explained. One of the recurring themes he hears from customers is that CIOs lack visibility into how employees are using AI. "Most of the CIOs first say that, 'Look, I need to have transparency, the discovery of what my employees are doing with AI. I have no idea," he said. When the board asks for answers, the execs often have to scramble to gather the information. Once they have visibility, customers can decide which AI applications and models employees are allowed to use. Then they can apply governance policies to inspect prompts and responses, giving them control over what users are allowed to ask and what information AI systems are permitted to return. This month's ZIA updates focus on expanding DLP visibility and control, giving admins more precise, time-bound policy enforcement and the ability to reduce noise by scoping DLP engines to specific channels. Highlights * Enhanced Web Logs: Added Support for DLP Policy Actions and Justification Messages: Admins can now filter and view logs for DLP policy actions and DLP confirmation messages. New filters and columns (DLP Policy Action and DLP Confirmation Message) have been added to Web Insights Logs and Endpoint DLP Insights Logs, improving audit readiness and incident investigation workflows. * File Type Control Policy Rule Expiration: Admins can now set an expiration date for File Type Control policy rules, providing more granular, time-bound control over file type enforcement policies. This is useful for temporary exceptions or time-limited operational windows. * Ability to Select Channels for DLP Engines: Custom and predefined DLP engines can now be scoped to apply only to specific channels (e.g., Endpoint DLP, DSPM), reducing noise from engines being applied to channels unnecessarily. This option is available when creating, editing, or cloning a DLP engine under Policies > Data Protection > Common Resources > DLP Dictionaries & Engines > DLP Engines. Zscaler Private Access (ZPA) Zscaler Private Access (ZPA) provides secure, zero trust connectivity between users and private applications without exposing those applications to the internet. It helps organizations reduce attack surface while improving access experience, which is especially important for distributed users, mission partners, and hybrid work environments common across federal agencies. This month's ZPA updates deliver business continuity improvements for multi-cloud log streaming and a recommended software update with refreshed RPM packages for supported platforms. Highlights * Business Continuity Update: Improvements to LSS-based Log Streaming in Business Continuity now support log streaming across multiple Private Clouds. This helps organizations maintain observability and compliance logging even during failover or multi-cloud operating scenarios. * Manager Software Updates: A recommended update (Manager software version 26.54.4) was released, including updated App Connector and Private Service Edge RPM packages for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.x and 9.x, and a Private Cloud Controller RPM package for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.x. Zscaler Digital Experience (ZDX) Zscaler Digital Experience (ZDX) provides visibility into end-user device health, application performance, and network path quality. This month's ZDX update introduces a new Network Intelligence dashboard that brings organization-wide network health visibility into a single view. Zscaler partners with Schwarz Digits to deliver sovereign cloud security for Europe. Cybersecurity platform leader Zscaler has announced a strategic partnership with Schwarz Digits, the IT and digital division of Schwarz Group, to deliver a European sovereign Zero Trust Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) solution hosted on Schwarz Digits' STACKIT cloud infrastructure in German data centers. Now available across Europe, the joint offering merges Zscaler's AI-powered Zero Trust Exchange platform with STACKIT's sovereign hosting, end-to-end management, and operational support to safeguard mission-critical workflows in public administration, defense, financial services, and healthcare against sophisticated AI-driven cyber threats. By ensuring complete EU data residency and local operational control, the combined platform provides European enterprises and public sector entities with an effective framework to fulfill stringent regulatory frameworks including NIS2, DORA, and the EU AI Act without compromising network performance or scalability.
