- A high school diploma or equivalent education is required.
- Successful completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program or military training equivalency is required.
- Two years of experience as a Surgical Technologist is required.
- Basic Life Support or Instructor certification from the American Heart Association is required.
- A Certified Surgical Technologist certification from NBSTSA, Tech in Surgery-Certified certification from NCCT, or Certified Surgical Assistant certification from NCCSA is required, unless the Texas grandfather clause applies.
- Thirty continuing education units must be completed every two years under SB1239.
- Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English is required to perform essential job functions affecting patient or employee safety or security.
- Knowledge of medical terminology is required.
- Proficiency with hospital databases such as EPIC is required.
- Knowledge of procedure software is required.
- Proficiency with instrument sets, individual surgical instruments, and surgical supplies is required.
- Competency in decontamination and use of autoclave equipment is required.
- Expertise in at least one surgical specialty service line is required.
- The role requires on-call availability during emergencies.
Responsibilities
- Perform delegated operating room support functions and related procedures safely and efficiently.
- Report observations and patient problems to the licensed nurse or surgeon.
- Provide mentoring and guidance to Surgical Technologists and serve as the department preceptor for new surgical technologists.
- Train and orient other surgical technologists.
- Provide general patient care and department upkeep as delegated by licensed personnel.
- Prepare the operating room, equipment, and supplies for the next patient.
- Anticipate instrumentation, equipment, and supply needs before the surgeon scrubs.
- Maintain and accurately communicate updates for surgeon preference cards within the applicable service line.
- Pass instruments and supplies for surgical procedures and provide surgical assistance across orthopedic, gynecologic, general, ear, nose, and throat, ophthalmologic, urologic, cardiovascular, spine, neurologic, oral and maxillofacial, and minimally invasive procedures.
- Assist the circulating registered nurse with sponge, instrument, needle, and other surgical counts.
- Maintain sterile technique during pre-procedure and post-procedure activities.
- Prepare sterile dressings and immobilization devices.
- Clean and prepare instruments for terminal sterilization after surgical procedures.
- Assist team members with terminal cleaning of the operating room.
- Assist with implementation and teaching of department safety initiatives and standards of practice.
- Manage multiple ongoing priorities with minimal supervision.
- Participate in debriefing and quality improvement practices.
- Initiate corrective actions and improvement activities, report near misses, and collaborate with the interprofessional healthcare team.
- Use surgical supplies efficiently and make cost-containment recommendations during cases.
- Manage time effectively, minimize incidental overtime, and prioritize daily tasks.
- Assist other team members between heavy workloads.
- Identify and present opportunities for innovation, efficiency, and improvement in department projects and shared governance activities.
- Act as a surgical technology resource for the department and hospital committees.
- Participate in a department or hospital committee or subcommittee and facilitate accomplishment of its goals.
- Pursue ongoing learning and competency development and maintain the My Development Plan.
