Requirements
  • Graduate of an accredited MD or DO medical school.
  • Completion of an Internal Medicine Residency Program.
  • Board Eligible in Internal Medicine, pending or recent graduates may apply; otherwise American Board of Internal Medicine certification is required.
  • License to practice medicine issued by the North Carolina Medical Board.
  • Federal and State Drug Enforcement Administration license.
  • Hematology/Oncology fellowship is preferred but not required.
  • Board certification in Hematology and/or Oncology is preferred but not required.
  • Hospitalist and/or Hematology/Oncology experience is preferred; new graduate applicants are welcome.
Responsibilities
  • Provide clinical care for adult oncology patients admitted at Duke University Hospital during the overnight shift.
  • Provide oversight of inpatients during the overnight shift, including admissions and transfers.
  • Engage in direct patient care activities when needed.
  • Assess and evaluate patients, manage pain and symptoms, plan and modify care, recommend medications and therapies, and make medical decisions.
  • Communicate directly with patient family members, friends, advocates, and others regarding patient status and care plans, while supporting an open visitor-friendly hospital environment.
  • Communicate extensively and continuously with primary oncology teams that manage patients' cancer care in the outpatient setting.
  • Conduct day-to-day patient contact, rounding, and care management with professional input from the interdisciplinary team.
  • Complete clinical and professional records and documentation accurately and promptly to comply with local, state, and federal regulatory, licensure, and accreditation requirements.
  • Work to create a positive culture within cross-departmental teams and align this work with other Oncology initiatives.
  • Perform other duties incidental to the work described.
Desired Qualifications
  • Hematology/Oncology fellowship.
  • Board certification in Hematology and/or Oncology.
  • Hospitalist and/or Hematology/Oncology experience.
