Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • For Title I schools, meet the employment requirements outlined by the Every Student Succeeds Act and have either six documented semester hours of coursework in early childhood education or two years of work experience in an early childhood setting.
  • Maintain Crisis Prevention and Intervention certification through the required renewal process; training will be provided if needed.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and Google Apps.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of instructional delivery methods, classroom activities, and routines.
  • Protect the confidentiality of personally identifiable information in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act and other applicable laws, policies, and regulations.
  • Monitor and supervise the safety and well-being of students.
  • Recognize and support students with varied backgrounds, abilities, exceptionalities, behavioral needs, and learning styles.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely in oral and written form using varied communication techniques and tools.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with school staff, students, parents, businesses, community agencies, and the public.
  • Be able to sit and stand throughout the day and perform medium physical work, including occasionally exerting up to 50 pounds of force, frequently up to 25 pounds, and constantly up to 10 pounds.
  • Be able to provide personal hygiene and restroom assistance, mobility assistance including lifting, positioning, or transferring students, and support for feeding, seizure control, and adaptive equipment needs when assigned.
Responsibilities
  • Provide support and assistance to teachers in coordinating instructional programs for special education students, including familiarity with students’ Individualized Education Programs.
  • Maintain an encouraging, caring, safe, and healthful environment for all students.
  • Assist teachers with strategies for implementing students’ behavioral intervention plans.
  • Aid teachers with planning and organizing, evaluating instructional activities, developing classroom procedures, and preparing lesson materials.
  • Provide in-class support while promoting students’ progress toward independence and self-determination.
  • Assist teachers with implementing low- and high-tech assistive technology and augmentative communication devices.
  • Compile, maintain, and file reports, records, and other required documents while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Coordinate, assist, and facilitate student transitions between classes.
  • Provide specialized student health care support, including hygiene, restroom functions, diapering, mobility, seizure control, feeding, and adaptive equipment needs.
  • Provide behavioral assistance and apply Crisis Prevention and Intervention skills.
  • For one-on-one assignments, support a student with severe to profound learning disabilities and complete specialized training determined by the student’s Individualized Education Program.
  • Participate in district staff development and continued professional growth.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Experience working with or assisting individuals with special needs, including physical, emotional, behavioral, or learning disabilities or impairments.
