Requirements
  • Possession of a license, and a current registration, issued by the State of New York to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse, or possession of a limited permit issued by New York State to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse.
  • Candidates must possess, or, for those with limited permits, obtain within one year, a current registration to practice as a Registered Nurse issued by the State of New York, and must maintain a valid registration throughout employment in this title.
  • Must maintain a valid registration throughout employment in this title.
  • Depending upon assignment, candidates may be required at the time of appointment and during employment in this title, to possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.
Responsibilities
  • Provides nursing care to patients in the Jails, including responding to emergencies, first aid, and CPR during emergency response;
  • Assists providers with examinations, special procedures and/or specialized therapeutic treatments;
  • Accepts orders from practitioners, including called in orders; Gives medication, immunizations and nursing treatment as prescribed by a physician, and notes reactions of patients to medications and treatments;
  • Supervises the work of Licensed Practical Nurses, Medical Assistants, and other medical personnel;
  • Makes rounds of housing areas, checks patients, nursing stations and supplies;
  • Obtains medical history of patients and screens for numerous biopsychosocial needs and/or problems, such as substance abuse, tuberculosis and infectious diseases;
  • Performs care for wounds, administers medications, gives injections and assesses patients;
  • Counsels and educates patients regarding their health and provider’s orders and the need for further diagnostic tests, and completes referrals to specialists and/or ancillary support services;
  • May serve as a member of various health center committees, such as quality assurance and infection control;
  • Writes reports, keeps statistics, and maintains charts and spreadsheets on the condition and progress of patients;
  • Tracks patients with specific conditions or treatments, such as MAT, diabetes, HIV, etc.
