Nominate a youth hero: Summer of Heroes returns for 2026. May 05, 2026 May 5, 2026 - Across Alaska, young people are quietly making their communities stronger. They are organizing service projects, supporting neighbors, standing up for others and stepping in where help is needed most. Alaska Communications is inviting Alaskans to help recognize these young leaders through its Summer of Heroes program, which celebrates youth who demonstrate compassion, initiative and a commitment to helping others. Each year, several young people are selected as youth heroes and awarded $2,000 scholarships in recognition of their community impact. Nominations are open now through June 14 and may be submitted by teachers, family members, friends or community members who know a young person whose actions are improving life for others. "Every year, we hear stories about young people who see a need and simply decide to help," said Paul Fenaroli, president and CEO of Alaska Communications. Alaska unlocks $629M in federal BEAD funding to connect 46,000 homes to high-speed internet

Alaska has received final approval for over $629 million in federal funding under the Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment programme, bringing its total BEAD allocation to more than $1 billion. The National Telecommunications and Information Administration approved the state's proposal to expand high-speed internet access across Alaska. The funding, managed through the Alaska Broadband Grant Program, represents the largest broadband investment in the state's history. Projects will deploy a mix of fibre, wireless, satellite and hybrid technologies to connect 46,192 homes and small businesses. The BEAD programme, established under the 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, mandates minimum broadband speeds of 100 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload to unserved and underserved communities. Alaska faces particularly complex connectivity challenges due to its terrain and remoteness.
