- Help lead the management of roadway and transportation-related design projects in accordance with established processes, schedules, budgets, design criteria, standards, and specifications.
- Supervise, train, and provide guidance to team members as needed to support organizational objectives.
- Communicate with staff, the public, and other Virginia Department of Transportation employees on engineering-related issues.
- Respond to stakeholder inquiries and participate in stakeholder meetings as necessary.
- Provide customer service in response to citizen inquiries and concerns.
- Develop, manage, and monitor budgets for assigned program areas, including staff, equipment, and projects.
- Monitor expenditures and allocation status and ensure financial metrics are met.
- Perform detailed technical engineering reviews of documents and projects as the responsible charge engineer when required.
- Formulate and document recommendations and present findings.
- Represent the Virginia Department of Transportation in meetings with outside entities and resolve issues of public concern.
- Coordinate with district and residency staff to communicate project issues and resolve problems with stakeholders.
- Monitor workload assignments so roadway designs and design tasks are completed according to project schedules and support Virginia Department of Transportation programs.
- Manage consultant design projects, design-build projects, and on-call contracts.
- Organize the work unit, assign workloads, manage time, adjust task priorities, and deliver projects on time and within budget.
- Fulfill responsible charge engineer duties in compliance with policies, procedures, and the Code of Virginia.
- Apply roadway design principles, hydraulic design principles, and survey knowledge to complex projects and resolve difficult problems.
- Ensure staff development, performance planning, evaluation, and recognition activities are completed.
- Experience in project and program management specific to transportation design and civil engineering.
