Requirements
  • A doctoral degree and two years of relevant postdoctoral training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Responsibilities
  • Direct small, complex research projects or major aspects of larger research projects, working independently on a phase of a complex project.
  • Design research projects or sub-projects, contribute to research proposals, and prepare regulatory documentation required for research.
  • Write research protocols covering study purposes, experimental design, materials, methods, and activity schedules.
  • Analyze and evaluate experimental data, interpret results, assess findings within the broader research program, and prepare written laboratory-work reports.
  • Contribute to the design, interpretation, and final writing of research publications, including co-authorship of scientific publications.
  • Direct the gathering of research materials, supplies, equipment, and apparatus.
  • Coordinate equipment repair, supply and research-material requisitioning, and minor construction support.
  • Develop and control research project budgets in consultation with supervising faculty, and maintain budget reports and records.
  • Recommend expenditures for major laboratory equipment and construction, and authorize expenditures for expendable supplies and maintenance.
  • Evaluate research equipment performance, make design changes, and develop new approaches for equipment use.
  • Stay current with research trends by reading literature, abstracting relevant scientific articles, and attending and presenting at scientific meetings, seminars, and conferences.
  • Develop and install laboratory operating procedures, independently operate complex equipment, modify test methods, select data-collection and data-handling procedures, and develop or use computer programs for data conversion and statistical analysis.
  • Interview, train, supervise, and evaluate staff.
  • Direct initial training and continuing skill development for staff and trainees in laboratory techniques and instrumentation procedures.
  • Counsel staff and trainees on technical problems and advise and assist them with special research projects.
