Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • At least one year of clinical experience is required, including at least six months within the past 12 months.
  • Practical knowledge of surgical equipment, instruments, supplies, and the skills needed to set up surgical materials and position and drape patients for surgery is required.
  • Practical knowledge and skills sufficient to recognize and assess deviations from normal conditions, make immediate modifications, and notify the Ophthalmologist in charge are required.
  • Knowledge of a wide variety of interrelated assignments and training or work experience sufficient to resolve a range of problems and carry assignments to completion is required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Microsoft and Adobe tools, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Acrobat, is required.
  • An active Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross must be maintained.
  • N95 respirator clearance for fit testing and unrestricted wearing must be provided before starting work and annually.
  • Tuberculosis screening must be completed within three months of reporting to the client site.
  • Required immunizations include Tdap, MMR or a positive antibody titer, varicella vaccination or acceptable immunity evidence, the Hepatitis B vaccine series or a positive surface antibody titer, and the annual influenza vaccine.
  • Annual medical clearance at the client site is required.
  • The candidate must pass a background check and may be required to complete additional project- or client-specific background checks.
  • The candidate must read, write, and speak English well enough to communicate effectively with all parties and health care providers.
  • The candidate must communicate clearly in person and by telephone.
  • The candidate must be able to respond effectively to customers with urgency, manage multiple tasks, work independently and as part of a team, and use computer and office productivity tools sufficiently to meet job demands.
  • The candidate must be physically and mentally able to perform the duties for extended periods and sit for long periods while looking at a computer screen.
  • The candidate must work on-site at the client's facility in Honolulu, Hawaii.
  • The candidate must be available for Monday-through-Friday hours from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with occasional Saturday, holiday, or other-hours work as needed.
  • The candidate may be required to travel for business or professional development purposes.
Responsibilities
  • Perform a full range of technical ophthalmic care using government-furnished facilities, equipment, and supplies for scheduled and unscheduled patient-care requirements.
  • Perform diagnostic examinations and provide timely treatment records and reports documenting procedures and care; refer patients to an optometrist or ophthalmologist for consultation when needed.
  • Provide technical knowledge and professional capabilities in ophthalmic services and refractions.
  • Assist with pre-operative evaluations, including corneal topography and pachymetry.
  • Set up the operating room, provide appropriate equipment and instruments for ophthalmic surgery cases, and maintain a sterile surgical environment.
  • Ensure the laser is operational and assist the surgeon in operating laser equipment during laser refractive surgery procedures.
  • Provide intra-operative support as a surgical assistant and scrub assistant.
  • Assist optometrists and ophthalmologists with routine and specialty contact lens care.
  • Provide post-operative support by disposing of contaminated supplies, cleaning and sterilizing instruments, sending damaged equipment for service or replacement, and preparing incident reports when indicated.
  • Assist with post-operative refractions and diagnostic testing under the guidance of an optometrist or ophthalmologist.
  • Provide and document telephone assistance to patients in accordance with Military Treatment Facility protocols.
  • Attend department meetings to review and evaluate patient care and treatment.
  • Participate in clinical research as directed by the Director of the Laser Refractive Surgery Center.
  • Provide clinical education and instruction to ophthalmology, optometry, and Physician Assistant students and residents rotating through Ophthalmology Services.
  • Maintain professional appearance and conduct, follow client policies and procedures, and adhere to Cayuse work practices.
  • Draft and deliver additional required reports and perform other assigned duties.
