Hypersonica GmbH develops hypersonic technology for aerospace and defense in Europe, aiming for speeds of Mach 5 and above. Its focus is on hypersonic vehicles that require advanced propulsion, heat-resistant materials, and complex aerodynamics, developed in stealth mode for dual-use government and future civil high-speed transport. The company is backed by investors including General Catalyst, 201 Ventures, ESA BIC, and TUM Venture Labs, with involvement in European accelerator networks for early-stage support. Its goal is to strengthen Europe’s resilience and space sovereignty by building private-sector hypersonic capabilities for defense and potential civilian high-speed applications.

What believers are saying

  • Plural led Hypersonica’s €23.3 million Series A on 9 February 2026.
  • The February 3, 2026 Andøya test validated systems above Mach 6 over 300 kilometers.
  • NATO demand for deep precision strike gives Hypersonica a funded customer path through 2027.

What critics are saying

  • €23.3 million funds a prototype, not serial hypersonic weapons development through 2029.
  • One Mach 6 test does not solve thermal protection, guidance, or repeatability.
  • German export controls and Norwegian test-range access can choke repeated launches and kill the program.

What makes Hypersonica unique

  • Feb. 2026 Mach 6 Andøya flight made Hypersonica Europe’s first privately funded hypersonic test.
  • Hypersonica combines German aerospace engineering with NATO-aligned strike capability and civilian high-speed ambitions.
  • SPRIND and General Catalyst back a sovereign European hypersonic stack, not a US clone.

Munich's Hypersonica raises €23.3M Series A, tests hypersonic missile at Mach 6

Munich-based hypersonic systems startup Hypersonica has emerged from stealth with a €23.3 million Series A funding round led by Plural and a successful test launch. Founded in December 2023, the company is developing Europe's first privately funded hypersonic strike capability. On 3 February, Hypersonica launched a missile prototype from Andøya Space in Norway, reaching speeds exceeding Mach 6 and a range over 300 kilometres. The company completed the vehicle's development in just nine months. The Series A round included participation from Germany's Federal Agency for Breakthrough Innovation, General Catalyst and 201 Ventures. Hypersonica aims to deliver an initial short-range hypersonic strike capability by 2027 and fully operational hypersonic glide vehicles by 2029, targeting NATO member states' defence requirements.
