The Director of Maintenance & Engineering plays a pivotal role in overseeing and guiding all maintenance and engineering operations for our Company’s research and administrative facilities at the West Point, Pennsylvania campus. This position will manage approximately 145 union and non-union personnel, ensuring a high standard of performance across all teams.
As the leader of the Maintenance & Engineering team, the incumbent will direct activities related to maintenance, engineering, reliability, stockroom management, and collaborate with key external service providers involved in Maintenance, Repair, and Operations (MRO) stockroom functions, as well as maintenance planning and scheduling. Responsibilities will encompass partnering with cross-functional teams to ensure the safe, efficient, and effective operation and upkeep of research and administrative facilities and systems. You will inspire and engage stakeholders both within and outside of Global Workplace and Enterprise Services by utilizing innovation, technical expertise, and strong communication skills to achieve business objectives. This role reports directly to the Executive Director of Engineering, Utilities, and Technical Services.
The primary activities include and are not limited to the following:
Leadership and Oversight: Direct and guide building maintenance and engineering functions which include Maintenance & Utilities, Maintenance & Reliability Engineering, and MRO Stockroom Operations, ensuring alignment with departmental objectives.
Cross-Department Collaboration: Lead with an enterprise mindset to partner with various Global Workplace and Enterprise Services organizations and other our Company divisions, engaging with internal customers, stakeholders, and external vendors to foster effective communication and support.
Technical Guidance and Solution Development: Provide expert technical guidance to employees and clients, anticipating their needs to identify and implement effective solutions.
Resource Management: Adapt departmental plans and priorities to address resource and operational challenges; forecast resource needs and manage the allocated budget efficiently.
Team Development: Enhance the organization’s technical and professional excellence by mentoring staff, selecting appropriate assignments, and facilitating training initiatives to build a skilled workforce.
Coaching for Diverse Perspectives: Encourage employees to examine issues through multiple lenses—including safety, compliance, automation, equipment, process, and personnel—to drive comprehensive resolutions.
Consultation on Complex Issues: Collaborate with next-level management on complex decisions and issues that impact other departments, ensuring informed decision-making.
Benchmarking and Continuous Improvement: Establish and maintain benchmarking processes to evaluate performance against industry standards, driving continuous improvement initiatives across all maintenance and engineering functions.
Performance Management through KPIs: Develop, track, and analyze key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure the effectiveness of teams and processes, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and driving accountability for performance outcomes.
Technical Support Oversight: Supervise the technical and engineering support team in activities that include:
Analyses of heating, cooling, hydraulic, electrical, and lighting systems
Conducting root cause analyses of equipment failures
Reviewing engineering project documentation
Performing Lifecycle Asset Management (LCAM) assessments, planning, and budgeting
Developing conceptual scopes for Global Workplace and Enterprise Services facility modifications
Managing the Building Information System for the PA Region
Implementing building systems strategic planning and reinvestment programs
Overseeing Reliability Engineering initiatives
Education Minimum Requirement:
Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field
Required Experience and Skills:
Minimum of 5 years in Maintenance, Engineering, Facilities, or Project Management.
Exceptional communication, leadership, and teamwork skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate cross-functional teams.
Comprehensive understanding of maintenance processes and systems.
Proven ability to lead, develop, and motivate cross-functional teams of internal employees and external service providers amidst competing priorities and agendas.
Familiarity with financial and budget management tasks.
Strong technical problem-solving abilities.
Demonstrated collaboration skills and a passion for delivering excellent customer service.
Preferred Experience and Skills:
Advanced degree in engineering or a related field.
Experience engaging with regulatory agencies and collaborating with external professionals.
Experience managing Collective Bargaining units and executing Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBA).
Familiarity working within an Integrated Facilities Management model.
Understanding of our Company projects and facilities.
Capacity to swiftly address issues and develop solutions that minimize compliance risks, enhance efficiencies, and optimize business resources.
Experience with software systems, including SAP and Hexagon.
