Didi returns to profit with $128M Q2 net income, holds 70% of China's ride-hailing market

Didi Global returned to profitability in Q2 with a net income of $128 million. The Chinese ride-hailing giant holds over 70% of China's domestic market despite facing competition from Alibaba's Amap and at least 339 other platforms offering discounted fares 10% to 40% below regular prices. The company delisted from the New York Stock Exchange in 2022 following a cybersecurity probe by Chinese regulators, which resulted in an 8 billion yuan ($1.19 billion) fine in July 2022. Didi is pursuing international expansion and now operates in 14 countries, including Hong Kong, as it diversifies beyond mainland China.

DiDi Global trading at 0.5x P/S as revenue grows 8.9% amid CN¥2.6B loss

DiDi Global has raised investor interest despite mixed performance, with shares down 34% year-to-date but gaining over the past three months. The company reported revenue of CN¥232.2 billion and a net loss of CN¥2.6 billion, whilst achieving 8.9% annual revenue growth. The stock trades at a price-to-sales ratio of 0.5x, significantly below the transportation sector average of 1.9x and an estimated fair ratio of 1.2x. Simply Wall St's DCF model suggests a fair value of $20.83 compared to the current price of $3.66, indicating substantial undervaluation. However, ongoing losses and a 24.5% decline in one-year shareholder returns highlight persistent profitability challenges. The steep discount may reflect market concerns about the company's path to profitability despite revenue growth.

DiDi Global shares slip 27% in 3 months as 105.7x P/E towers over industry average

DiDi Global shares have declined 27% over the past three months, with the stock trading at $3.42. Despite revenue of CN¥226.7 billion and net income of CN¥992.6 million, the company's price-to-earnings ratio stands at 105.7x, significantly above the US Transportation industry average of 39.7x and peer average of 26.5x. Analysts forecast earnings growth of 49.7% annually over the next three years, with return on equity projected at 12.3%. However, the current P/E multiple exceeds the estimated fair value of 46.1x, suggesting the market has priced in substantial optimism. The company operates mobility platforms across China and international markets through its China Mobility, International and Other Initiatives segments. The valuation premium could narrow if market sentiment shifts.
