Requirements
  • A Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree is required.
  • Current Illinois registered nurse licensure is required.
  • The candidate must hold national specialty nursing certification in the clinical area or nursing administration, or complete it within 24 months of assuming the role.
  • A minimum of three years of acute care nursing experience as a registered nurse is required, along with demonstrated progressive leadership or management skills.
  • The candidate must understand nurse-sensitive quality indicators and basic hospital and nursing regulatory requirements.
Responsibilities
  • Operate within the health system and Nursing Division mission, vision, strategic priorities, and goals.
  • Assume 24-hour accountability for unit management and the quality of patient care on designated units.
  • Create and maintain a work environment conducive to effective communication, collaboration, teambuilding, and nursing professionalism.
  • Ensure care is appropriate to the ages of patients served and that staff are competent to provide safe, quality, evidence-based nursing care.
  • Maintain positive physician and interdepartmental relationships and positive employee morale.
  • Demonstrate responsibility for personal and professional growth through ongoing education, projects, and an annual professional development plan.
  • Provide and receive formal peer-to-peer feedback among nurse leader colleagues.
  • Empower staff to enhance patient-focused nursing care and quality patient outcomes through patient satisfaction and quality improvement efforts.
  • Foster values, professionalism, accountability, and shared decision-making between staff and management.
  • Serve as a professional nurse role model and develop future nursing leaders through succession planning.
  • Maintain knowledge of unit patient populations, their care needs, new clinical treatments and services, and current nursing practice trends.
  • Lead unit-based changes to improve patient care delivery.
  • Collaborate with peers, staff, medical staff, and interdepartmental and intraprofessional partners to improve patient care, unit efficiency, and effectiveness.
  • Build and maintain a strong Unit-Based Council to facilitate shared decision-making.
  • Participate in professional organizations and community health-related services and agencies.
  • Facilitate open and honest communication, information sharing, staff meetings, and Nurse Management Council and Department Managers' meetings.
  • Recruit, interview, select, schedule, retain, monitor, appraise, and provide corrective or disciplinary action for unit-based staff in accordance with hospital policies.
  • Facilitate staff personal and professional growth opportunities and recognize staff achievements.
  • Support divisional recruitment, retention, and staff satisfaction initiatives.
  • Participate in annual budget preparation, identify capital equipment and staffing needs, and monitor supplies, expenditures, operating statements, productivity reports, and budget variances.
  • Implement cost-effective strategies for effective and efficient patient care delivery and educate staff about unit operations and fiscal responsibilities.
  • Engage staff in developing annual unit and individual goals aligned with organizational and Nursing strategic priorities.
  • Develop mechanisms to fulfill unit goals and objectives and regularly review goals and action plans with staff.
  • Identify quality improvement opportunities, use quality improvement tools and techniques, and lead clinical problem solving and best-practice adoption.
  • Evaluate standards of care, measure patient-population outcomes, and ensure unit performance data is gathered, monitored, reported, and used to improve quality and efficiency.
  • Promote analytical thinking, evidence-based nursing practice, nursing research, and scholarship activities.
  • Foster collaborative research relationships with healthcare institutions and healthcare providers.
  • Perform other related work as required or requested.
