Alfa Laval launches new waste heat recovery boiler for cruise vessels. September 5, 2026 Alfa Laval has launched Hukka-5, a new exhaust gas steam boiler designed for cruise vessels and passenger ferries. The company introduced the system at SMM 2026. Hukka-5 uses exhaust gas waste heat to generate steam. This can help vessels reduce fuel consumption and CO[2] emissions. The new boiler is available immediately for project orders. New design targets greater energy efficiency. Hukka-5 introduces a downward natural circulation design. Natural circulation removes the need for circulation pumps. Instead, the system uses physical principles to circulate water through the boiler. According to Alfa Laval, the new design allows operators to recover more waste heat without increasing the equipment footprint. This is particularly important on cruise vessels, where space inside funnels is limited. The system is designed for vessels with four-stroke engines. Alfa Laval sees particular potential for cruise ships and ferries with frequent port calls. "Our previous state-of-the-art WHR boiler, Aalborg XWi, set the standard for natural circulation on cruise vessels," said Matti Takasuo, General Manager for BD & Sales for Power, Offshore & Cruise at Alfa Laval. He added that Hukka-5 can recover more waste heat without requiring additional space. Hukka-5 supports alternative fuels. The Hukka-5 forms part of Alfa Laval's Hukka exhaust gas steam boiler range. The range can work with engines and gas turbines using different fuels, including methanol and hydrogen. Its modular design also allows operators to select different heat recovery configurations. In addition, electrical steam generation can be integrated into the system. This can support steam production during port stays when shore power is available. Alfa Laval targets lower fuel use and emissions. By recovering energy from exhaust gases, Hukka-5 can reduce the amount of additional fuel required for onboard energy needs. Alfa Laval said this can lower operating costs and CO[2] emissions. The company has completed more than 1,300 waste heat recovery boiler installations for cruise vessels and passenger ferries since 2000. According to Alfa Laval, these systems currently reduce CO[2] emissions by more than 10 million tonnes annually.
Alfa Laval launches PureBallast 3 Ultra Skid ballast water management system. September 3, 2026 (C) Alfa Laval Alfa Laval unveiled PureBallast 3 Ultra Skid, a new skid-mounted version of its PureBallast 3 Ultra ballast water management system, at SMM 2026. Developed in response to customer demand, the PureBallast 3 Ultra Skid combines the system's biological treatment performance with a prefabricated design that minimizes footprint and installation time. As shipyards face increasing pressure to reduce installation time and improve standardization, demand for factory-assembled turnkey ballast water management solutions has grown. The PureBallast 3 Ultra Skid addresses these requirements by delivering the complete treatment system preassembled on a compact skid with prefabricated piping, tested and ready for installation. Rather than installing individual components separately onboard, shipyards receive a standardized module that significantly reduces engineering effort and installation complexity. PureBallast 3 Ultra Skid builds on the same advanced treatment technology introduced with PureBallast 3 Ultra. Operating without chemicals, the automated inline system combines high-performance filtration with enhanced UV treatment to deliver superior biological disinfection performance across fresh, brackish and marine waters, including challenging low-clarity conditions. With environmental regulations in the maritime industry continuing to tighten, this level of performance across the full range of water conditions is engineered to keep vessels compliant wherever they operate. Optimized reactor design supports effective treatment with low energy consumption, while the compact skid minimizes the overall system footprint. Engineered entirely by Alfa Laval, the skid is delivered fully assembled, factory tested and ready for connection, helping shipyards simplify installation, shorten installation schedules and reduce project complexity. The skid is available for capacities ranging from 32 to 600 m^3/h. All PureBallast 3 Ultra systems, including the new skid version, are delivered connectivity-ready, enabling remote monitoring and optimized service support throughout the vessel's lifetime. The system is type approved by IMO and the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) and is designed for ballast water treatment across all water salinities.
Alfa Laval to supply electrolyser cooling technology for Moeve's 300 MW Onuba Green Hydrogen project. Alfa Laval has been selected to provide critical cooling technology for Moeve's Onuba H2 project in Huelva, Spain, a 300 MW green hydrogen development that is set to become the largest electrolyser plant in Southern Europe. The project, located at Moeve's La Rábida Energy Park, forms the industrial anchor of the Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley. Its initial 300 MW of electrolysis capacity could later be expanded by another 105 MW, while planned green hydrogen production is expected to reach approximately 45,000 tonnes per year. Alfa Laval will supply a total of 60 heat exchangers for the facility, covering balance-of-plant cooling, electrolyser cooling and gas cooling. The equipment will help maintain the operating conditions required for efficient, reliable and safe large-scale hydrogen production. Cooling technology for large-scale green hydrogen production. Thermal management is an important part of electrolyser operation, particularly as green hydrogen projects move towards larger industrial capacities. For Onuba H2, Alfa Laval's heat-transfer equipment will be integrated into different parts of the electrolysis system to manage temperatures during hydrogen production and associated processes. Onuba H2 targets 45,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually. Led by Moeve, Onuba H2 is positioned as a major component of Spain's emerging renewable hydrogen industry. The project is expected to produce 45,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, providing renewable hydrogen for applications aimed at reducing emissions from transport and industrial activities. The development is part of the wider Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley, which has been recognised by the European Commission as a Project of Common Interest (PCI). According to Alfa Laval, the designation can facilitate access to public grants and subsidies. The project is particularly focused on sectors where direct electrification can be difficult, including energy-intensive industries and heavy transport. Renewable hydrogen can replace more carbon-intensive fuels and feedstocks in some of these applications. Andalusia builds its green hydrogen industry. The Onuba H2 project is designed to take advantage of Andalusia's renewable energy resources, existing industrial infrastructure and strategic location. For Alfa Laval, participation in the project also highlights the wider supply chain required to move green hydrogen production to industrial scale. Electrolysers represent the core production technology, but large facilities also depend on supporting systems for cooling, gas handling and other balance-of-plant functions. With 300 MW planned initially, a potential additional 105 MW and expected production of 45,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year, Onuba H2 is set to become a significant part of the Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley and Moeve's renewable hydrogen ambitions in Spain.

Its revolutionary inverted, downward natural circulation design enables efficient recovery of exhaust gas waste heat while minimising equipment footprint. By capturing and reusing exhaust gas waste heat, the innovative boiler helps operators significantly reduce fuel consumption and CO[2] emissions, supporting both environmental targets and operational efficiency. Natural circulation has become the industry standard for exhaust gas steam boilers on cruise vessels, eliminating the need for circulation pumps by harnessing physical principles to move water through the boiler unit. With Hukka-5, Alfa Laval takes this technology further by introducing downward natural circulation. The design enables counter-current flow conditions, even within the limited space of ship funnels, resulting in a minimised exhaust gas boiler (EGB) footprint. This minimises the risk of flow instabilities in the evaporative circuits, even with exhaust gas temperature fluctuations which could be the case when using alternative fuels. The result is a waste heat recovery solution designed to deliver optimal operational performance, enhanced safety and advanced energy efficiency on vessels with four-stroke engines, especially those with frequent port calls, such as cruise ships and passenger ferries. Speaking at a high-level Thought Leadership Forum hosted by Alfa Laval, in partnership with Business Sweden, he said that the continent's global dependency created vulnerability, as Africa imported large volumes of staple foods, such as wheat, rice and maize, and was experienced global shocks, including wars, which disrupted fertiliser, grain and logistics flows. The forum, which convened Swedish and South African government representatives, industry leaders and technical experts, explored how Africa stands at a pivotal moment where food security, pharmaceutical self-sufficiency and water resilience have become urgent priorities shaping the continent's industrial future. Conflict is a primary driver of food security, with 167-million people - 78% in conflict-affected countries - having faced acute food insecurity in 2025. Further, climate and water stress exacerbate the situation, with agricultural productivity reducing 34% since 1961 owing to climate change, and extreme weather, droughts and floods increasingly disrupting food systems and water availability. "The [challenges] are now national and geopolitical priorities... it is now the central discussion around government and the public sector working together with the private sector." Africa still remains globally vulnerable as a net importer dependent on the global value chains. Upwards of $50-billion is spent every year on food imports, while 300-million people lack safe water access and millions live within the boundaries of undernourishment, yet the continent has 60% of the world's uncultivated arable land that could be used for food production. "There is quite a lot of focus from a policy perspective where governments are now pushing in terms of trying to create and support local value chains," he noted, pointing out that this could be through policy implementation and investments into local production chains that could support farmer supply in the regions. Strong policy frameworks would mobilise investment and strengthen food security financing, Koke said, highlighting the need to create an enabling policy environment that attracted investment and reduced financial risks; allocate adequate public resources to agriculture, nutrition, rural infrastructure and extension services; address structural inequalities; and coordinate climate adaptation, social protection and conflict-sensitive interventions to build resilient food systems. Further actions include implementing the Comprehensive Africa Agricultural Development Programme, or CAADP, and national food system strategies with measurable targets and accountability; supporting access to finance through guarantees, insurance schemes and public-private partnerships; and strengthening land, trade and regulatory frameworks to improve agricultural productivity and market efficiency. During his presentation, Koke noted that increasing policies that support facilitation and incentives had led to direct increases in regional foreign direct investment (FDI), with Africa recording a 75% rise in FDI between 2023 and 2024 driven by a mega infrastructure project in Egypt. Excluding that, flows still grew 12% supported by investment reforms and improved facilitation across the continent. Africa, boasting 18 of the worlds 30 fastest-growing economies, a $2.8-trillion regional GDP and 3.9% GDP growth rate in 2025, presents an ideal market for growth, with natural, human, financial and business capital driving regional market growth. Africa is home to 30% of global mineral reserves and could capture over 10% of the $16-trillion in revenue from key green minerals by 2030, while the continent's median age of 19 represents a demographic dividend that could add $47-billion to Africa's GDP through improved workforce participation. Pension fund assets have grown to $1.1-trillion and formal remittances could reach $500-billion by 2035 if transfer costs are reduced, while the full implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area Agreement could increase exports by $560-billion and boost continental income by $450-billion by 2035. In addition, Africa's population has grown more than sixfold since 1950, an increase of 1.3-billion people, and, with a continuing population expansion, will add nearly one-billion total residents, rising to 2.5-billion, by 2050. Africa's working age population will increase from 660-million in 2024 to 1.25-billion in 2050. The continent is also the fastest-urbanising region globally, with urban populations growing at an average annual rate of 3.5%, with the expectation that this will increase from a 43% urbanisation rate to a 60% urbanisation rate. Urbanisation consistently correlates with higher regional productivity, job creation and better socioeconomic outcomes compared with rural averages. While these trends present significant opportunities, it also brings many challenges, including infrastructure pressures, as unprecedented spatial expansion will push total urban footprints to 175 000 km[2] by 2050, straining housing, transport and basic municipal services, and the development of informal settlements, with projections indicating high vulnerability to resource strain, with proactive long-term investments needed in climate-resilient and inclusive planning.
