Requirements
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in architecture required.
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in architecture from an accredited program preferred.
  • Generally, at least 20 years of related experience in design leadership roles or equivalent is required.
  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience leading others in a design studio or design practice segment required.
  • Current US Architectural Registration preferred.
  • Additional accreditation and/or training relevant to this role is preferred, including LEED.
  • Design portfolio of significant built and unbuilt work.
  • Third party recognition of your work as a lead designer by local, regional, and national design awards programs and recognized design publications or digital platforms is preferred.
  • Strong oral presentation and storytelling skills required.
  • Must be able to understand and execute business strategy.
  • Must have professional acumen and maturity demonstrated by the ability to communicate authentically and respectfully.
  • Travel required.
Responsibilities
  • Transforming design excellence: be accountable for design excellence and overall design quality across the region, including regular touchpoints with senior design leaders and other design leaders in your region; holding virtual and in-person regional design-standard reviews; providing oversight of regional third-party recognition, including publication of projects in design and market-specific media outlets, as well as other opportunities for publication such as articles on research and innovation; region expected to regularly submit and win design awards; contribute to firm portfolio; lead living-centered design ethos translated through work with clients; partner with marketing and communications to build narratives; represent the Firm externally at regional events, conferences and broader events; write, speak and communicate externally through 3-5 venues annually; identify strategic placement/speaking opportunities.
  • Transforming the design team: nurture a community of designers in the region; set standards for collaboration, experimentation, innovation, creativity, entrepreneurship; partner with Executive Director of Design in recruitment of and retention of senior design leaders; hold senior design leaders accountable for mentorship and growth of next generation; ensure high-performance design teams across offices; coordinate with Regional Director, Regional Practice Director and Office Practice Leaders to fill talent gaps; be an ambassador with regional leadership team of our brand, demonstrating Living-Centered Design ethos in culture and client work.
  • Transforming the organization: be leading regional voice for design aspiration; participate in regional leadership team and ensure design aspirations considered in regional and firm business goals; contribute to definition and execution of strategic regional growth plan; partner to develop and implement business plan with key strategies and entrepreneurial initiatives; engage senior design leaders to participate; own, communicate, and champion initiatives; success measured by regional metrics and overall performance of all regions; accountable to CEO and executive team as a single region and collectively.
  • Time commitments and performance expectations: Transforming design excellence 60%, Transforming design team 30%, Transforming the organization 10%.
  • Demonstrable design talent: evidence of design ability through a design portfolio of significant built and unbuilt work; third party recognition of your work as lead designer by design awards programs and publications preferred.
  • Strong communication skills: aptitude to communicate complex ideas; lead voice in firm-wide meetings and events; provide inspirational leadership; communicate design aspirations, outcomes, directions, and initiatives to our people.
  • Leadership, management and community-building: manage a diverse team across multiple offices; foster connection and identity among regional design leaders; promote collaboration with other disciplines; responsible for hiring, design management, creative operations, and resource allocation.
  • Business fluency: understand regional and firm business metrics; translate strategic framework into regional growth goals; contribute to regional growth plan and growth initiatives in other regions.
