Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Central Processing certification is required.
  • Basic Life Support certification must be obtained within 30 days of hire.
  • One year of experience in central processing or an operating room-related area is required.
  • The employee must be able to lift heavy objects, bend, stoop, and stand for prolonged periods.
  • Visual and hearing ability must be adequate to comprehend written and verbal communication.
  • The role requires the ability to attend to more than one aspect of a situation simultaneously.
  • The role requires efficient processing of verbal information in written or spoken form.
  • The role requires independent thought, planning, and origination of options and solutions.
  • The role requires applying reasoning and problem-solving principles to resolve practical problems involving concrete variables with limited standardization.
  • The employee is exposed to bloodborne pathogens, latex, medications, sharps, and radiation.
Responsibilities
  • Manage the flow of sterile instruments, supplies, and case carts between Central Processing and the Operating Room.
  • Monitor, order, receive, and store supplies within the Operating Room area.
  • Assist the perioperative team as directed.
  • Monitor and maintain all sterilizers located in the central core.
  • Manage supplies and instruments located in the Operating Room.
  • Request, receive, and distribute case carts before scheduled Operating Room times and for add-on and emergency cases throughout the working day.
  • Complete and submit daily orders for Central Stores and Central Processing supplies.
  • Ensure stock supplies are available throughout the working day.
  • Control, replenish, and maintain the flow of linen, pour solutions, supplies, and instruments between the central core and Central Processing.
  • Check packaging integrity before placing items on shelves.
  • Rotate supplies and instruments using a last-in, first-out system.
  • Clean carts and check supply expiration dates weekly.
  • Assist perioperative clinical staff as directed.
  • Assist the circulator by obtaining supplies needed intraoperatively.
  • Wash and sterilize instruments.
  • Assist with Operating Room turnover.
  • Monitor and record sterilization processes for sterilizers in the central core.
  • Run and prepare biological indicators and controls for the incubation process.
  • Log identification and contents information for all loads.
  • Perform relief transport duties as assigned.
  • Communicate supply, instrument, and equipment information to Operating Room and Central Processing staff, including item locations, surgeon names, manufacturer processing information, and notices for missing or broken items.
  • Keep the director informed about reportable incidents and departmental concerns.
  • Precept and guide new employees as needed.
  • Attend mandatory hospital training classes and educational programs.
  • Attend and participate in at least three staff meetings annually.
  • Adjust working hours to meet departmental needs.
  • Participate in the annual inventory count.
