Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Two years of full-time experience working with secondary age youth or adults with disabilities
  • Two years of full-time experience working in a skilled trade area
  • Demonstrated knowledge of appropriate work habits and social skills and attitudes necessary for successful adjustment to a work environment
  • Basic math skills, including measurement, decimals and fractions
  • Demonstrated ability to follow and interpret step by step instructions and provide necessary guidance to special education students in doing the same
  • Learn to adapt training methods to the abilities of students with disabilities
  • Exercise patience and understanding in providing emotional support and encouragement to special education students
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships
Responsibilities
  • Assists the career and technical education instructor in the implementation and delivery of the vocational education program
  • Interprets in the instructor’s directions for students and assists them in completing assigned tasks
  • Provides reinforcement of theory lessons, skills and safety techniques
  • Circulates through the classroom and/or school/facility as required by work assignment
  • Provides support to students assigned to industry-based training programs
  • Orients students to job site and basic organizational rules
  • Trains students in specific job skills while on the job
  • Inspects work for adherence to quality control specifications
  • Coaches students in peer and supervisory relationships
  • Monitors students’ job performance and reports progress and/or problems to immediate supervisor
  • Provides training to special education students in the use of mechanical tools, measuring instruments and equipment
  • Inventories and issues materials and tools to students
  • Oversees and monitors students cleaning the work areas
  • Assists in mobility training
  • Assists in the selection of instructional aids and materials
  • Assists the instructor in skills demonstrations
