Requirements
  • A Juris Doctor degree and admission to the bar in good standing in the employed state or states are required.
  • A minimum of two years of experience in the insurance industry and one year of legal, compliance, or regulatory experience is required.
  • A minimum of four years of legal experience is required.
  • Knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations governing insurance is required.
  • Ability to understand complex legal issues is required.
  • Ability to interface with legal counsel and business groups at all levels of the organization is required.
  • Leadership, management, and advocacy skills are required.
  • Problem-solving, project-management, and attention-to-detail skills are required.
  • Knowledge of policy and procedure development and training methods and materials is required.
  • Basic knowledge of corporate policies and procedures is required.
  • Basic to working knowledge of contracting concepts and the Uniform Commercial Code is required.
  • Ability to draft and review simple contractual instruments is required.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret statutes, business and legal periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and government regulations is required.
  • A valid operator license and ability to drive an automobile are required.
  • Close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus are required.
  • Certification or progress toward certification is highly preferred and encouraged.
  • Two years of experience in the insurance industry is preferred.
Responsibilities
  • Serve in an advisory capacity to the enterprise and business units regarding insurance coverage and extra-contractual disputes and litigation.
  • Conduct legal research, draft brief legal opinions, and provide legal advice at claim review meetings.
  • Examine records and conduct investigations.
  • Attend depositions and mediations.
  • Retain and manage outside panel counsel as needed.
  • Manage coverage and extra-contractual litigation by and against the company.
  • Participate in company negotiations, including settlements.
  • Provide leadership and expertise for training and major company projects as necessary.
  • Apply legal principles, knowledge, and skills based on experience.
  • Evaluate and select appropriate legal techniques, procedures, and criteria using judgment to solve legal issues.
  • Draft or dictate legal correspondence and memorandums and work with minimal supervision on assigned matters.
  • Provide timely legal opinions and advice upon reasonable demand.
  • Provide objective assessments of risk areas.
  • Work on assigned special projects.
  • Give work directions to legal support professionals in the department.
  • Work with outside counsel to prepare for and attend depositions.
  • Prepare for and attend hearings and appeals.
  • Handle complex assigned legal projects requiring originality and ingenuity.
  • Serve in an advisory capacity by making recommendations affecting organizational business, including risk assessment, outcome identification, and probability assessment.
  • Identify risks and design or implement controls to mitigate those risks.
  • Research, plan, organize, and conduct programs, seminars, conferences, and presentations for company personnel on legal matters.
  • Actively participate in company and community events.
  • Travel as required.
