Requirements
  • A Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or equivalent is required.
  • A minimum of 7 years of industrial experience, including at least 3 years in power electronics integration, motion control, turbomachinery, or a similar area, is required.
  • Demonstrated success in hands-on setup, operation, and troubleshooting of complex electrical systems is required.
  • Experience with power electronics troubleshooting is preferred.
  • Hands-on familiarity with industrial communication protocols such as Modbus and signal-level instrumentation is preferred.
  • Experience designing digital, analog, and power electronic circuits is a plus.
  • Familiarity with motor controls is a plus.
  • Ability to use and set up test equipment such as oscilloscopes, data loggers/analyzers, and software development tools is required.
  • Familiarity with safety requirements for high-power applications is required.
  • Familiarity with the agency approval process, including UL and CE, is a plus.
  • Understanding of digital, analog, and power electronics components and their operation is required.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills in complex electrical systems are required.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills are required.

Responsibilities
  • Follow the requirements of Upwing Energy’s Quality Management System.
  • Own and optimize the design, performance, and durability of the main power delivery system, including the variable frequency drive, motor, cabling, transformer, and supervisory control system.
  • Own and optimize the design, performance, and durability of ancillary equipment, including remote data communication and storage, cooling cart, controls container mechanical definition, 120V power supply transformer, HVAC, and Hydraulic Control Center.
  • Own and optimize the electrical systems within the Subsurface Compressor Systems.
  • Maintain bills of materials and electrical drawing packages for SCC, HCC, and SCS electrical components and systems.
  • Review and evaluate existing systems against customer requirements.
  • Support development efforts for new products and improvements to existing products.
  • Work with experts to validate electrical system designs for present and future products.
  • Interpret and draw conclusions from test data obtained during validation activities.
  • Train and support production and field teams on product assembly and connection processes.
  • Document electrical system configurations, user guides, and procedures.
  • Develop and document test setups and procedures.
  • Work with suppliers to optimize power electronics and motor designs.
  • Develop and champion company electrical safety best practices.
  • Maintain a safe working environment for self and others.
  • Lead troubleshooting efforts on electrical systems.
  • Provide field service support when required.
  • Conduct root cause failure analysis of failed electrical systems.
  • Conduct electrical system modeling for unique deployment configurations.

Upwing Energy provides downhole gas compression systems for the oil and gas industry. It designs and sells subsurface compressors that sit in the well and boost gas production by drawing gas closer to the perforations. The main product, the SCS 425, uses a magnetically levitated permanent magnet motor to drive a high-speed compressor downhole. Torque is transmitted from the motor to the compressor through a magnetic coupling instead of a traditional rotating shaft, so there are no rotary seals or pressure chambers in the transfer path. Electric parts are hermetically sealed to prevent common ESP failures. The system is built to handle harsh downhole environments and is serviced through sales, maintenance contracts, and technology licensing. Compared with conventional downhole pumps, Upwing Energy emphasizes reliability under extreme conditions and leveraging magnetic technologies from its parent company, Calnetix Technologies, to improve gas drawdown and recoverable reserves.
