Requirements
  • A D.V.M./V.M.D. degree from a veterinary school listed by the American Veterinary Medical Association is required.
  • Three years of diagnostic pathology experience, which may be part of post-DVM residency training, are required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English in written and oral formats is required.
  • Strong organizational skills are required.
  • Strong interpersonal skills are required.
  • ACVP or ECVP board eligibility in Anatomic Pathology is required.
  • The role includes laboratory work with potential exposure to hazardous chemicals, human and monkey tissue that may contain infectious agents, dry ice, and Animal Biosafety Level 3 conditions.
  • Evening and weekend work is occasionally required by the scope of the position.
Responsibilities
  • Perform gross and microscopic post mortem evaluation of nonhuman primates and other laboratory animals in support of the ONPRC research mission.
  • Provide pathology support through data collection, tissue distribution, interpretation of pathologic and other research endpoints, participation in study design, and manuscript preparation.
  • Perform gross and microscopic post mortem evaluation of nonhuman primates and other laboratory and wildlife species when indicated, comprising less than 5% of the caseload, in support of the ONPRC nonhuman primate colony.
  • Characterize spontaneous nonhuman primate diseases that may be useful as models for human diseases and diseases important to laboratory nonhuman primate colonies.
  • Provide training for pre- and post-graduate veterinarians through on-campus externships and residency programs, including one-on-one teaching and lectures.
  • Support a postgraduate training position in nonhuman primate pathology.
  • Serve as a resource for nonhuman primate pathology through teaching, publications, presentations in local, national, and international settings, and contributions to the Primate Pathology Image Database.
  • Perform various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the mission of the Pathology Services Unit.
Desired Qualifications
  • A Master's degree or Ph.D. in a pathology-related area of study is preferred.
  • Experience providing pathology support for comparative research and/or six months of clinical veterinary experience is preferred.
  • Nonhuman primate pathology experience is preferred.
  • Management experience is preferred.
  • ACVP or ECVP board certification in Anatomic Pathology is preferred.
