UPS sees China-to-US air freight return to growth as Amazon glide-down ends

UPS has completed its 18-month reduction of Amazon deliveries and raised its full-year revenue and earnings guidance as it focuses on higher-margin volumes. The company's China-to-US trade lane returned to year-over-year growth starting in May, one year after air freight volumes collapsed due to US tariffs and the end of the de minimis provision for Chinese goods. Chief financial officer Brian Dykes said the growth coincided with the company lapping last year's elimination of the duty-free trade exemption. According to the International Air Transport Association, air cargo demand on the Asia-to-North America route increased 19.9% in May. Amazon now represents 9% of UPS revenue, down from over 13% during the pandemic e-commerce boom. The reduction removed approximately $4.5 billion in related expenses.

UPS yields 5% cash as ex-Amazon strategy boosts profits, but competition looms

UPS returns 5% of its market value in free cash annually, exceeding the S&P 500 median of 4.2%, yet its stock has fallen approximately 10% from recent highs. The company deliberately removed 2 million Amazon packages daily to focus on higher-margin business. The strategy shows early success. US Domestic operating profit jumped 21% year-over-year, whilst volume from small and medium-sized businesses grew 4.3%. Healthcare revenue exceeded $3 billion for the second consecutive quarter. UPS has cut $4.5 billion in expenses and reduced costs per piece by 28% through automation. However, analysts express concern about intensifying competition for premium customers. Amazon, formerly UPS's high-volume partner, now competes directly for the same lucrative segments UPS targets.

UPS and FedEx eye cold-chain growth as GLP-1 drug demand surges

United Parcel Service and FedEx are capitalising on growing demand for temperature-controlled shipping, driven largely by GLP-1 weight-loss and diabetes medications like Ozempic and Wegovy, which require refrigeration throughout transit. A Gallup poll found 11% of Americans used GLP-1 drugs for weight loss in 2026, up from 3% in 2024. Medicare recently began offering some GLP-1 prescriptions for $50 monthly, potentially boosting demand further. UPS reported its first $3 billion healthcare revenue quarter this year. In June, the company announced a $48 million investment in 27 temperature-controlled facilities. It has also acquired cold-chain firms Frigo-Trans, BPL, and Andlauer Healthcare Group for $1.6 billion. Bernstein and Citi raised their UPS price targets to $133 and $132 respectively, citing improving transport market conditions.
