Requirements
  • A B.E., B.Tech, M.E., or M.Tech degree in Mechanical, Mechatronics, Robotics, Electrical/Electronics, Instrumentation, Industrial, Aerospace, or Systems Engineering; candidates from Applied Sciences or Experimental Physics with strong hands-on engineering exposure may also be considered.
  • Approximately two years of hands-on experience in robotics and automation across a variety of solutioning-driven projects.
  • Demonstrated experimentation experience in a lab, research and development, or test-engineering environment, including designing trials rather than only executing an existing checklist.
  • Working knowledge of Robot Operating System 2, including nodes, topics, launch files, and basic packages, and the ability to write production-quality-enough Python for automation, data capture, and analysis.
  • Basic embedded-systems knowledge, including microcontrollers, sensor interfacing, UART, I2C, SPI, and CAN protocols, and the ability to read a datasheet and connect a sensor.
  • Hands-on competence with electromechanical assemblies, sensors, instrumentation, wiring, and calibration.
  • Understanding of experimental methods, statistics and design of experiments, control systems, and system design through coursework, research, or industry work.
  • Ability to work with engineering data from physical trials and perform statistical analysis and interpretation.
  • Strong documentation skills for structured test reports, experiment logs, and result summaries.
  • Genuine appetite to learn across disciplines and comfort working on an unsolved problem where the right answer is not known yet.
Responsibilities
  • Design, build, instrument, and maintain test rigs, fixtures, and experimental setups for robotic drywall finishing trials.
  • Integrate sensors, end-of-arm tooling, actuators, and data acquisition hardware into working setups, including wiring, mounting, calibration, and day-to-day upkeep.
  • Debug setups end to end across mechanical, electrical, embedded, and software layers, and keep them in a known-good, repeatable state.
  • Improve setup design over time so experiments become faster, cleaner, and easier to reproduce.
  • Design and run controlled experiments on robotic drywall finishing processes using hypothesis-driven and design-of-experiments-based approaches.
  • Identify and isolate independent, dependent, controlled, and confounding variables across physical trials.
  • Maintain repeatability and reproducibility in measurement workflows and distinguish real effects from setup noise.
  • Analyse cross-system interactions across the robot arm, end-effector, sensors, surface material, and motion parameters to support debugging and process improvement.
  • Document observations rigorously and convert trial results into experiment logs, test reports, and result summaries that support engineering decisions.
  • Automate test and measurement protocols using Robot Operating System 2 and Python to increase the rate of experimentation.
  • Script robot motion sequences, parameter sweeps, and data capture so trials run consistently with minimal manual intervention.
  • Build tooling for automated data collection, logging, and first-pass analysis to reduce manual effort between running a trial and reading the result.
  • Work with the robotics team on deep data collection from end-of-arm systems with advanced sensors, from wiring and drivers through structured, analysable datasets.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with industrial or collaborative robot arms such as UR, KUKA, ABB, or Fanuc, including motion programming and integration.
  • Prior work with imaging-based experimentation setups, including computer vision, machine vision, optical measurement, or laser-based measurement.
  • Experience designing test setups, instrumentation chains, or validation workflows from scratch.
  • Experience integrating force/torque sensors, IMUs, depth cameras, encoders, or other advanced sensing into a working data pipeline.
  • Familiarity with data acquisition systems, real-time logging, or time-synchronised multi-sensor capture.
  • Comfort with Excel, Google Sheets, Python libraries such as NumPy, pandas, and matplotlib, or MATLAB for experiment logging, analysis, and plotting.
  • Exposure to computer-aided design tools such as SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or Onshape for designing fixtures and brackets.
  • Experience with version control using Git and documentation tools such as Notion, Confluence, Jira, or Google Docs.
  • Exposure to simulation environments such as Gazebo or Isaac Sim, or to process and materials domains such as coatings, surface finishing, or abrasives.

Origin builds a general-purpose construction robot that automates interior finishing trades such as drywall finishing and painting on real job sites. The AI-powered system can operate power tools and work alongside human crews across multiple trades. It is already deployed on live job sites in New York City with major contractor partners. Its goal is to enable scalable, high-quality, and cost-efficient construction by augmenting or replacing manual interior finishing work with intelligent robotics.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • March 2026 caps reached multiple global beverage brands, showing real customer validation.
  • February 2026 Matrix partnership extends 2026 qualification trials and product runs.
  • September 2025 Starlinger equipment financing supports PET sheet production through 2029 repayment.

What critics are saying

  • Origin approved dissolution on August 12, 2026, making employer durability existentially weak.
  • Management cut 59% of staff on May 1, 2026, and John Bissell stepped down.
  • Cash lasts only into Q3 2026 without financing, forcing asset sales or shutdown.

What makes Origin unique

  • Origin still owns PET cap technology with customer-requested designs and qualification data.
  • Matrix Bottling partnership broadens commercialization through U.S. bottling and capping services.
  • HP Embalagens distribution gives Origin access to Nestlé, Ferrero Rocher, and J&J networks.
