L&G hires new tech chief Jamie Ovenden from Schroders. Jamie Ovenden will lead a newly unified tech, data, and AI division as part of CEO António Simões' ongoing strategy to streamline operations and reduce structural complexity, while COO Katie Worgan prepares to exit. Tyler Pathe, Senior Reporter, FinTech Futures September 7, 2026 London-listed Legal & General has named Jamie Ovenden as the group's new chief technology, data, and innovation officer, recruited from competing asset manager Schroders. Ovenden is a long-time technology executive. His IT leadership began in the retail sector, working for companies like Figleaves.com, N Brown, and Dune, transitioning to real estate investment group Arcadia, where Ovenden focused on digital and retail technology. He originally joined Schroders in December 2019 as global head of enterprise technology, digital, and innovation, before being promoted to group CTO in December 2020. Notable highlights from his tenure include a technology outsourcing agreement with UST, targeting £150 million in cost savings over two years. Legal & General says the addition of Ovenden "brings together technology, data, AI and platforms under one leader", with the appointment forming part of a strategy to be "a simpler, more focused and more competitive business". Legal & General now also reveals that Katie Worgan, group chief operating officer, will step down from her role at the end of this year. She first joined the group in March 2025, appointed by group CEO António Simões. Both worked together at HSBC for a number of years. Simões has executed a large-scale effort to simplify Legal & General since taking over from Nigel Wilson at the start of 2024. He actioned the £1.35 billion sale of housebuilder Cala Group and the $2.3 billion sale of its US life insurance business to Meiji Yasuda. Structurally, Legal & General merged its two separate public and private investment arms, LGIM and LGC, into a single asset management division, followed by a similar move with its index funds and ETF operations. Legal & General is now outsourcing private credit origination to Blackstone, and expanded a cloud and AI agreement with Microsoft in June to further deploy Microsoft 365 Copilot and Microsoft Azure. These developments have seen Legal & General focus on three core business areas, namely institutional retirement, asset management, and UK retail, which manages workplace pensions, annuities, personal savings, and life insurance policies. Simões' leaner corporate blueprint appears to be working, evidenced by a 7% rise in core operating profits to £918 million in H1 2026. Ovenden will now work to weave a unified digital thread between these three focus areas. He will work alongside Michael Spiteri, who was appointed as group CTO in May. Senior Reporter, FinTech Futures Tyler Pathe is a financial reporter, moderator and investigator with a specific interest in financial technology, banking and the financial industry's latest innovations.

Aprirose scores £134.5m social housing refinancing package. Real estate investment firm Aprirose has secured a £134.5m debt facility with Legal & General's (L&G's) private credit platform to refinance a social housing portfolio. The five-year facility will refinance a portfolio comprising 840 social housing units across Bristol, Crawley and East Grinstead, which Aprirose acquired in 2021. The financing was completed on behalf of both external clients and L&G's Institutional Retirement business. Gareth Taylor, head of debt capital markets at Aprirose, said: "We are very pleased to continue to support much-needed social housing in the UK. We are equally pleased to be working with a new lender in L&G, and the process with the team throughout was very sleek and professional." Patrick Sweeney, director at L&G real estate debt investments, added: "We are continuing to deliver on our promise to invest in, develop and help facilitate through debt financing the provision of social and affordable housing in the UK. "The portfolio is well managed and has an excellent financial track record. We look forward to building on our new relationship with Aprirose and helping assist in their ambitions with the portfolio over the next five years." Earlier this summer, Aprirose Real Estate Investment appointed Refresh, Watkin Jones Group's asset enhancement platform, to upgrade and refurbish its Reading student accommodation asset.

Quilter: How probate trusts reduce delays when families need certainty Estate planning is often viewed through the lens of inheritance tax (IHT), but that can miss a practical problem families face after death: how quickly assets of the estate can be made available. Its recent analysis of Ministry of Justice data revealed the number of probate cases taking between 21 and 23 months to be granted has risen by 131% since 2020/21, writes Tom Archer, tax and trusts specialist at Quilter. When pensions are brought into the scope of IHT from April 2027, executors may also have more valuations, reporting and administration to deal with. In short, more potential delays. St James's Place (SJP) partner firms that want to either expand or sell their business have an option to do this internally through the group's Business Sale & Purchase (BSP) proposition. Up to 300 BSPs are completed each year, with a total annual transaction value of around £200m, writes Amanda Newman Smith in its latest At the Helm feature. Given that SJP facilitates loans for SJP partners that are buying another SJP business, there are concerns about how much influence the group has in things such as valuations through BSPs.
