Requirements
  • Graduate from an accredited registered nursing school.
  • Have two years of Utilization Management or Case Management experience.
  • Have working knowledge of MCG and Intensity of Service/Severity of Illness criteria.
  • Have working knowledge of Title XXII and Title XIX.
  • Have working knowledge of reimbursement related to Medicare, Medi-Cal, Capitation, Shared Risk, and Managed Care.
  • Be able to negotiate with physicians, payers, and customers.
  • Be able to track outcomes and report findings.
  • Be able to problem solve effectively.
  • Be able to use clinical knowledge to identify potential quality issues.
  • Provide proper notification of absence or tardiness within established departmental time frames.
  • Hold a current California Registered Nurse license.
  • Hold a current Basic Life Support card.
Responsibilities
  • Ensure that appeal templates include the reason for denial, diagnosis codes, MCG criteria used to support the appeal, highlights of medical necessity supporting the appeal, and only the supporting documents necessary to support the appeal.
  • Know appeal deadlines and ensure appeals are submitted within the required timeframe; track responses and follow up as appropriate.
  • Maintain working knowledge of appeal levels, timelines, and contractual requirements related to appeals.
  • Work with payers to resolve issues related to underpayments or increased denial trends.
  • Maintain working knowledge of contracts to ensure appropriate reimbursement.
  • Work closely with facility department directors, including Admitting, Case Management, Patient Accounting, and CBO Directors, to review, resolve, and streamline necessary aspects of the appeals process.
  • Establish an appropriate tool for measuring denial tracking and trending; track and trend data, identify opportunities for improvement, and establish process improvement strategies as appropriate.
  • Work closely with Case Managers regarding the peer-to-peer process for concurrent denials, ensuring completion within timeframes and logging the cases.
  • Create a weekly or monthly peer-to-peer report for presentation at denials meetings.
  • Provide education and training to medical staff, nursing staff, or others related to denial prevention as requested.
  • Lead RAC preparedness and assist the facility during RAC audits.
  • Participate in continuing education regarding current laws that prevent unlawful denials, the California Code of Regulations, and HMO compliance.
  • Attend training and develop relevant knowledge and skills related to identified gaps.
  • Participate in all corporate and facility-based denials meetings.
  • Participate in Utilization Management and other meetings regarding denials and audits as necessary.
  • Perform other responsibilities and duties related to denials and denial prevention as delegated or assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • A Bachelor of Science in Nursing is preferred.
  • Four years of recent acute care experience in a critical care setting is preferred.
