Requirements
  • A Ph.D. in synthetic organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, or a closely related field plus 3 years of relevant industry or postdoctoral experience; or an M.S. with 6 years, or a B.S. with 9 years, of relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to design and execute multi-step syntheses, including routes of approximately five or more steps through characterized final compounds, and to deliver compounds on schedule.
  • Independent route-design judgment under real constraints on materials, time, building blocks, and execution resources, supported by a broad synthetic-organic reaction toolkit and strong purification and characterization skills.
  • Routine hands-on use of computer-aided synthesis planning or retrosynthesis tools, with the judgment to recognize when a proposed route or prediction should not be trusted.
  • Fluency with chemical structure and reaction data, including molecular and reaction representations, compound registration, stereochemistry, salts, tautomers, and building-block catalogs.
  • Experience with reaction screening, high-throughput experimentation, design of experiments, or related optimization workflows, plus disciplined structured capture of conditions, outcomes, analytical results, and failures.
Responsibilities
  • Design, select, and execute practical multi-step routes to novel drug-like singleton compounds and focused sets under real constraints on time, materials, building blocks, and available resources.
  • Apply a broad synthetic-organic chemistry toolkit and own purification and characterization through delivery of high-quality, well-characterized compounds on schedule.
  • Use computer-aided synthesis planning, retrosynthesis, and reaction-condition tools routinely; critically evaluate proposed routes and predictions and explain when they are implausible, impractical, or outside reliable coverage.
  • Use chemical structure and reaction representations and building-block catalogs to constrain plans to realistic starting materials, and design or interpret high-throughput experimentation and other reaction-optimization experiments.
  • Feed practical outcomes and corrected synthetic judgment back into planning, prediction, and cheminformatics workflows.
  • Record every campaign, including failures, in structured, machine-readable form covering conditions, stoichiometry, outcomes, analytical data, and negative results.
  • Design chemistry for automation and parallel execution where useful, while recognizing when a route genuinely requires manual bench work.
  • Collaborate with chemists, computational scientists, and software engineers to define useful tools, make go/no-go heuristics explicit, and mentor junior chemists.
Desired Qualifications
  • Python scripting with tools such as RDKit, pandas, or Jupyter for manipulating compound sets, parsing analytical output, or prototyping analyses.
  • Experience running chemistry on robotic platforms, liquid handlers, flow systems, or other automated resources.
  • Industrial high-throughput experimentation or nanoscale reaction-screening experience.
  • Prior work in a contract research organization, fee-for-service, or similarly schedule-driven environment.
  • Experience with electronic laboratory notebook or laboratory information management system configuration or reaction-data model definition.
  • Experience scaling a validated route from milligram to multi-gram quantities.
  • Experience with inline or process monitoring such as ReactIR, benchtop nuclear magnetic resonance, or online liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry.
  • Experience mentoring or supervising junior chemists.
  • Publications or patents describing multi-step routes to biologically active compounds.

Ginkgo Bioworks pivots to autonomous labs as Q1 revenue falls 49% to $19M

Ginkgo Bioworks is refocusing on autonomous laboratories following the divestiture of its biosecurity business, which closed on 3 April. The biosecurity spin-off created a new company called Perimeter and brought in $60 million, with Ginkgo retaining a shareholding. CEO Jason Kelly said the company's 2026 investment priorities centre on winning the autonomous lab category through running services on its Boston-based Nebula system and selling autonomous lab systems to early adopters like Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. First-quarter revenue from continuing operations fell 49% year-over-year to $19 million, though excluding a $7.5 million non-cash item from 2025, the decline was 37%. Operating expenses dropped significantly, with research and development costs down 38% to $30 million and general and administrative expenses falling 35% to $13 million.

Ginkgo Bioworks launches cloud lab with AI-powered autonomous infrastructure

Ginkgo Bioworks has launched Ginkgo Cloud Lab, a web-based interface allowing researchers to access the company's autonomous laboratory infrastructure remotely. The platform runs on proprietary Reconfigurable Automation Carts, which combine robotic arms, maglev sample transport and industrial software. Ginkgo Bioworks pivots to autonomous labs, plans biosecurity spin-off amid revenue decline

Ginkgo Bioworks has outlined a 2026 strategy centred on autonomous labs, whilst reporting declining cell engineering revenue and improved cash burn. The company will concentrate capital on its Nebula system in Boston, expand capacity towards 100 racks, and commercialise offerings including Solutions, Datapoints and cloud lab services integrated with AI. Cell engineering revenue fell 26% year-on-year in Q4, with full-year revenue of $133 million versus $174 million in 2024. However, R&D and G&A cuts improved losses, reducing cash burn to $171 million for 2025. Management is guiding cash burn of $125–$150 million for 2026. The company plans to spin off its biosecurity business to outside investors whilst retaining a minority stake, freeing capital for autonomous lab investments.
